3rd Gen folks, I have a question about the little piece of metal that the spring loaded button on the end of the slide stop makes contact with. I don't know the name of the piece but is it part of the grips or attached to the frame. The reason I'm asking is because I'm thinking of getting a 4566 that is listed on Gunsamerica, and in one the pictures, that little piece of metal appears to be missing. The gun is wearing factory black plastic grips.

Thanks for any and all replies!

That is not part of the grips. It is called a sideplate assembly and is attached to the frame.

It is attached to the hammer pin/fire control parts andis the bearing surface for the slide stop. I has to be there for the gun to work.

Maybe the slide stop surface it is broken off on the gun you are viewing.

I went and looked at the two 4566's for sale on Gunsamerica.

The first listing, with the OEM Xenoy grips, box and two mags, appears to be missing its sideplate assembly.

The seller should either discount the purchase for you, or provide the part. IIRC it is not a cheap part. Good luck! Regards 18DAI.

Thanks for the quick replies. I thought it looked like a part was missing. I think I'll pass on this one.

From the S&W site Parts List for 4566:

View Part Number Price Rev. Description
66 108600000 $6.84 X SIDEPLATE ASSY

Seems cheap enough and it's easy enough to replace.
