Good morning,
I've been trying to get the slide back on the frame without success for a few days now. I can get the slide as far as the sear release, but for some reason, I can't keep the s.r. depressed long enough to clear the slide. It seems to me that the spring is pushing it up as the slide moves back. This is not a new gun to me and I've field stripped it multiple times before this. Is there something I'm missing?

I see that you still do not have an answer. I was hoping there was someone with a better explanation than I might offer. I have a 639. Sometimes the slide will not move all they way back at reassembly. I have always believed that the cause was the guide rod was hanging up on the lip of the channel it goes into. I will usually just take it apart and reset the rod and try again. The guide rod has a spring and a plunger which is punch set into the guide rod. This can work loose over time and allow the guide rod flange to cant off at an angle. You can either buy a new guide rod or if you have the skill take a punch and reset the part. I put mine in a vise to depress the spring and plunger. Then I put a piece of wood under the rod and punch set each place where it was peened before. I do one twice and rotate to the next place. It takes about three times around before the part is tight again. Check your guide rod and see if the flange end is loose. Good luck. Bruce

In the cocked position the ejector, sear release lever and firing pin safety lever are all in there respective ready to fire positions. The gun must be decocked to install the slide. Then you can fully depress those parts.Bruce
