For short barrels, I prefer the Speer Short Barrel Ammunition

I settled on the Short Barrel Load Gold Dot 230 gr loads for my SA Micro. I just seemed to shoot it better than the lighter loads and hits count, misses don't! It's really going to be an individual thing in the end. No one solution works for every combination of gun and user.

I can't say for sure without conducting my own tests, but lighter bullets generally have an easier time expanding from short barrels because they are able to exceed their expansion threshold (the velocity at which a bullet will expand) by quite a few more fps.

In my experience, you have two choices for short barrel ammo:

1. Speer's 230 grain SB ammo is superb; and

2. Either the Federal HST +P or the Speer Gold Dot +P. My preference is the 230 grain but the 200 grain is good stuff too. These loads will make up for that missing inch or two but are less controlable than the SB load.

JMHO.....they're all good. ;)

I prefer 185 +Ps for short barrels. The extra speed compensates somewhatfor the speed lost due to the short barrel. Cor Bon makes a nice 185 +P. Remington's Golden Saber shoots nicely out of my Star PD's 3 incher.
