.45acp Reloads

My reloads from two different semi-auto half the time the bullets "Keyhole".
Thinking moving the bullet faster might cure "Keyholing"?

If the round cycles, its fast enough. I think you have diff issues. Usually keyhole is an undersized bullet or damaged bullet base of damaged criwn on the muzzle. I've run 185gr diwn at 700fps for speed steel, no keyholes.

You are likely running 0.451", too small. If you are using lfcd, stop, that is likely sizing the bullet smaller, results, keyholes.

Unique is an accurate powder in my 9mm loads but bulky and
with the heavier bullets that take up case volume I have switched
to using BE-86 powder.
BE-86 gets higher fps than Unique with the large 147gr bullet.

In the 45.........
you might look at BE-86 or even CFE for an powder that flows better than Unique, for lead target loads.
Many think w231 is the best target powder.....maybe WSF?

Have fun.

Groo here
5 gr Bullseye is te WW2 government load for the 230gr boolet.
Put it under a 200gr boolet and you get JMB's load
Put it under a 185gr boolet and you get a light target load.

Jimmy,

I have 2 different loads for my target 45.
For 200gr SWC (lead) sized at 0.452", I use 4.7gr of WW231 and use a 10# recoil spring.
For 200gr TMJ SWC, I load 5.7gr of WW231 with a 14# recoil spring.

I reserve Bullseye for my 38 Special HBWC target loads.

Hope this helps!

Unique is a great powder but it's drawback is it's harder to meter through a powder measure. The big flakes tend to get caught between the drum and housing and flakes are often cut causing changes to the density of the powder so if you're really looking for charge consistency, it's best to weigh each charge which is often a pita.
Since you're shooting jacketed bullets, I think your charge is a little light, bumping the charge up to about 5 gr. of Bullseye or a little more might help. I use 5.3 gr. of Bullseye with the 230 gr. FMJ bullet and it shoots fine in my 1911.

I can get unique to 1/10gr accuracy in my dillon or rcbs measures. Unique meters fine, but does vary with technique & measure. Even with that, unique will still often be more accurate than other powders with lead bullets.

Instead of Unique, I load .45ACP with 8 grains of Accurate Arms #5 under a 230 grain hardcast. AA powders meter superbly in a powder thrower. Burns cleaner than Alliant powders.

I have used with success
5.3gr of Unique
200gr LSWC
Check your reloading manuals and have fun

Have used 6 gr. of Unique with a #68 H&G 2000 SWC bullet for many years. It is superbly accurate in all of my .45's.
Sometimes referred to as the old "Combat Load" by early action pistol shooters.

I have found Unique to be very "sooty" at low pressures. You may want to look at VV N310 with 200 grain cast swcs. If I remember correctly, N310 is the powder Wilson Combat uses to test its pistols. N310 burns very cleanly, and meters exceptionally well. The down side is I've noticed some disagreement as to the upper limits of load data, and from my experience is temperature sensitive.

Not to mention higher cost.

If you want to use Unique, use Unique.

I'm a big fan of Hi-Skor 800X even though it is worse at flowing through a meter than Unique. I load on a single stage press, so when I get ready to charge cases, I just set the meter to drop the load into the pan of my balance slightly light and then use a powder trickler to bring it up to the desired weight. In the rare event a heavier than desired charge gets thrown, it is no big deal to just pick the pan off the scale and dump the powder back into the hopper and try again.

Personally, for 185 and 200 grain bullets in 45 ACP in 1911 style guns, I really like Blue Dot.

i honestly havent reloaded in several years but i have my 'cookbook' notes and i used 5.8 grns of unique with a 200gr lead swc .452 and 1.23 oal. that said, i mostly used 4.0 grns of red dot with the same bullet

This guy right here got it..... I recently switched to accurate #5 for my standard 45 acp load. 8 gr with 200gr plated bullets and it seems to work great. Very little soot and very mild load probably around 850 to 900 fps. I never used unique as a standard load but have played with it when I started loading 45 super. I couldn't get the soot to go away until over 8 gr of unique with a 185gr xtp bullet. It didn't fully go away until over 10 gr of powder. I switched to power pistol and like it much better than unique.

The only problem with accurate #5 is not very dense. At 8 gr of powder your only filling the case about half capacity. I haven't seen any draw backs to it yet but it is something to consider. It sure does meter superbly though. Once I set my LNL AP powder measure it never moved from 8 gr. I checked every ten rounds to 200 and it was on 8 gr everytime.

Even if Unique is hard to meter, I would like to load unique.
any opinions ?

Thanks,
Jimmy

Give BE86 a try, unless ya got a supply of Unique already. I've used it in .45ACP & went back to Green Dot, FWIW.

The BE86 sure was clean, though, even at low pressure .45 target load levels. It's my go-to for .454 Casull light range fodder.

This is my reloading area. See any Unique? Me neither. :D

If we're talking strictly target loads for the .45ACP...

The USMC Camp Perry team wins with VihtaVuori N310.

I have a buddy who is a High Master bullseye shooter and he loads Winchester WST.

I use both of those and also Winchester 231 for loading 185-200 grain bullets.

I can achieve 10-shot, sub-3"" groups @ 50 yards from a bone-stock 1911 in a Ransom rest.

I see the above post beat me to it . I use WST with 230 gr fmj bullets l. Near current max load . I'm very happy with it . Before I used Bullseye and Red Dot powders . I always thought Red Dot did a little better job , just my opinion . Regards, Paul
