460 mild load for 460 cases

Hey. I have 2400. Online data says 31 gr with 250 g bullet
Also have HS-6. But only found that it can be used ???
Unique. Loaded the 454 with these in my 454.
I would like a mild load for the 460.
I try my best just to shoot the shell it was designed for
Just like my 38 sp. only in the 38. Even though I have a 357 .
454 for 454. Got pet loads for that gun
My daughters love shooting that one at reduced load
Now that I got the 460. Like to have a load my daughters can shoot.
Also have H110 and W296. Save those loads for the flame cutting bear loads. But not as bad if used 300+ gr and above

playing off the reservation, I cooked up a cast 230 grain load using 45 win mag data with Unique.
I'd call it mild ... for a 460
Ended up being a very good target load.

Will not hurt,will be hotter than 45colt.

Here's some of my hard cast light "plinker" 12" XVR loads :

255 Elmer Keith SWC : 12 gr. of Trail Boss approx 1000 FPS

255 Elmer SWC's 11.5 gr of WST approx 1100 fps

remember back off my suggestions on the powder and work up. My Elmer Keith's were soft and I didn't want anything higher than 1100 fps so I stopped at the above loads. I started at 9.5 , no squibs but definitely a mellow starting load at around 800 fps. FYI shooting hard cast lead out of the 460's will make a big mess of your nice shiny SS pistol, so get ready for a in depth post shooting cleanup..

2400 is pretty forgiving also when down loading although will be dirty if you go to low.

In your case I might consider just shooting 45 C which I typically avoid. If you chose this route PM me and I can send you some brass.

It depends on how much recoil reduction you are trying to achieve.

When I return to the states I will PM you some other pressure tested choices with slow powders.

Yeh. I got plent of colt factory rounds. Also have plenty of 454. I might have to shoot those but sure dont like the extra cleaning afterwards because the factory or reload 460s will have sticky cases that also cause flyiers . Downloading with a 255 lead to around 1200 wouldnt be bad

Well, broke out a box of win onceshot thats been resized and primed with fed LRMP and grabded the box of 255 lead

460 reduced loads

I've used 22.0gr/2400 with J&K's cast 245gr L-RNFP (BHN:16) and MBC's coated cast 255gr L-SWC-HT (BHN:18) @ ~1100fps.

I use Zero's 230gr JHP with 13.0gr & 14.0gr/Unique, ~1150fps & ~1250fps, COAL"= 2.080", taper crimped over ogive (no cannelure) to eliminate bullet jump in my 460 Carry. Zero has pretty thick copper jackets but don't try using them at high velocities.

These Unique loads are fine with the above cast lead bullets too, if you don't have any leading issues. I use up to 16.0gr/Unique, with the appropriate bullet.

I think these are over your 1200 fps goal. 29.5gr/2400 is a max load (1697fps) in 454C with a 240gr JHP @ 54K CUP (Lyman #49). Pressure will be less in the 33% larger 460 case. Better to start low & work up.

Man. Not loud. No kick. Seam the 20.2 was a close nit group. But not as close as the 200 factory load though but for plinking. Fun

I agree that the 454 Casull case is slightly longer than the 45 Colt (0.098") but the 460 is a lot longer (0.515"). A huge difference that results in a large drop in pressure from the 45% more case capacity.

Sometimes when you're trying to create a reduced load for a combination not (well) documented this is all you can do, along with educatated calculations. Obviously a chrono would be a good asset to have too.
