460XVR 12" vs 14"

My local dealer has the 12 Inch on the shelf new.

I told him I was real glad it was not a 500, or I might have been doing some trading for it.

If I'm not mistaken, as far as barrel goes, the only difference between the 12 and 14 is the break. I will shorten the story, but due to a lovely genetic disease, I haven't been able to shoot a rifle or hunt in about 35 years. I can shoot a handgun. The answer for me to hunt game over 100 yds was the 460. I bought the 14", put a 2.5 - 8 Leupold on it, and that is my rifle. 12 / 14? Couldn't say, but I can say this is an outstanding revolver and you wouldn't be disappointed either way. I'm sure the 14 is louder than the 12, but the biggest thing is that you have to watch to the side as well. I have blown cases, ammo, etc. off the bench. You HAVE to be VERY considerate to the person next to you at the range depending on the dividers. This gun came from the factory with (my measure) 2.5 lb. single action trigger pull. It is by far and away the best factory trigger I have ever seen and I own over 25 handguns. This gun is also deadly accurate. After all the mounting, accessories, and sighting in, I fired a full cylinder at 100 yards from a bench, with 0 wind and Hornady ammo. ALL 5 shots were touching! I have NEVER been able to do that with ANY handgun. I would say, save the $200, that is exactly what I did. Either way, I don't think you will be disappointed.

only difference between mine and yours is mine being limited edition Ellet brothers in 2tone color and my cylinder is fluted. man oh man, I love this gun.

this is exactly my gun and what it will look like when I get it scoped. so in love with it...lol

Would you still get burned if you used a vertical grip on the bottom rail? Anyone care to take a pic?

I have a Lew Horton 6.5" With 2 warne mounts and a 2x leupold scope. The zero hasn't moved in 7 years thru all kinds of Ohio weather. I would highly recommend warne mounts

I hadn't updated in a while... But I decided to utilize my usual gun buying strategy.... I bought both!... Right now im suffering from a 460 addiction.. I'm actually looking for a 3.5" lew horton 460!

as newbs said watch the side blast had a friend place upper part of thumb between cylinder and forcing cone cut the top inch right off

I was contemplating one of these monsters recently and noticed something strange..
The 12" model

Product: Model 460XVR
Has a MSRP of 1619

While the 14" model (with muzzlebrake and bipod)

Product: Model 460XVR
Has a MSRP of 1419

So how would the longer barrel plus a bipod make it $200 cheaper? Usually barrel length doesnt play that much into price..

Granted I've also heard the 14" model is a very elusive beast to see out in the wild. I've read on some posts that very few were actually made. I dont think I've ever seen one actually for sale either....

I wondered that as well and bought the 14" 460 mag XVR.

The 14" is not hard to find. I bought one 5 weeks ago from my local gun shop for $1,350. You'll see them on gunsamerica.com as well.

I had to send mine back because the 460 mag shells had to be pounded out of the revolver. They're shipping it back within 3 weeks. Not bad turn-around. They replaced the revolver and we'll see how it works now.

Love the gun though. It's a beast when shooting the 460 mag. The 45 long colt ammo is much tamer. Google and watch the Myth Busters youtube on it, so you won't put your steadying hand near the barrel/revolver gap. Supposedly blew a thumb off and the Myth Busters youtube will confirm that.

Not a gun for the novice.

Those 12" & 14" .460's look wild !
Unreal muzzlebrake on the 14".
I believe i'll stick with my 460XVR in the 8 3/8", at least can hold it up without using a bipod --------- :D

Ernie

Good point! I have the 14" and love the bipod. Shooting without the bipod is an experience. Awesome Gun. If I had it to do over again, I WOULD.

Did you have any problems extracting the spent shells? I had to pound the spent Federal 460 mag shells out. Sent the gun back, they've replaced the revolver and I can't wait to get it back this Tuesday. 3 week turn around - not bad.

I was very impressed with the trigger action as well. First Class.

I'm hoping for 6" to 1' groups at 100 yards, with the stock iron sights. Good enough for me. It's my pirate gun for taking out engines and putting holes in any hull. Hopefully, not for shooting any people. One shot from this gun and the thieves will go pick on someone else.

Yes and I love the gun. Probably the nastiest looking handgun I've ever seen or shot. I have two Desert Eagles as well, with multiple barrels, but this gun is unique. Buy it, you won't regret it.

14" Issues...?

Good afternoon! I am a new forum member (first post) and wanted to ask you about a few things regarding the 14 inch XVR. I received mine new about one year ago. Initially, I was shocked at how inconsistent and how inaccurate my shots were at 15 yds 25 yds and so on with 45LC, 454 C and slower versions of .460 ammo. My barrel was rotating to the point where the shroud nut unscrewed itself and the barrel was touching the cylinder. Long story short, it went back to S&W and they ultimately replaced it. The new (identical) 14" XVR had the same accuracy issues and the barrel rotated too. Two for two, right? Ugh!

One year later, I have determined a few things that I feel are facts, but I wanted to put some feelers out there and get some thoughts. Regarding the barrel rotating, the force of the rifle spin (think Newton on this one) is causing the barrel to rotate left. About 100 rounds later, mine has stopped rotating (approx 15 degrees total) and I am maintaining a .102mm BC. 14" XVR specific, has this happened to anyone else? The accuracy issue for me is this... Again, specific to the 14" model (looooong barrel)... Anything slower than 2,200 fps and I'm all over the place. Now, the Hornady FTX's? I am 2 inch groups at 100yds all day long (Leupold VX-3 and Leupold PRW mounts, forward in the rails at 30 in-lb). Does velocity and recoil really have that much impact on, well, impact?

Regarding 45C and Casuall consistenance, it would be expected they are not going to be as accurate due to the additional free bore the bullet has to travel.

My barrel was rotating to the point where the shroud nut unscrewed itself and the barrel was touching the cylinder. Long story short, it went back to S&W and they ultimately replaced it.

I have had 460 barrel tension come lose, if this happens you should not continue shooting - it need to be corrected. I believe it related to several factors, not tensioned enough at factory and overheating the gun.

The new (identical) 14" XVR had the same accuracy issues

As stated above this is inherent in the design. All guns shoots most accurately with the cartridge they were designed for. If another cartridge is capable to be safely fired it is a compromise at best form the design.

Your barrel should not rotate if the tension has been set corrected. Yours may have reached the correct tension by shooting but this dangerous. Note also that as the barrel rotates the BC changes.
Barrel tension also effects accuracy of the gun.

The accuracy issue for me is this... Again, specific to the 14" model (looooong barrel)... Anything slower than 2,200 fps and I'm all over the place. Now, the Hornady FTX's? Bullet weight and velocity effect point of impact- simple physics.
Heavy bullets tend to print higher, the longer the barrel the more obvious it becomes- they are in the barrel longer and are effected more because of this.

These effects are well documented and discussed in the handgun community- more so with the big bore revolver crowd.

Getting good with the 460 take lots of practice- by lots I mean 50 to 100 rounds a session and shooting at least once a week.

Take up reloading if you don't already- this will increase the amount of shooting for your dollar spent.
Quite shooting the shorter cartridges-if you want reduced loads -load them in 460 brass- in my mind reduced recoil load defeat the purpose of owning a 460 in the first place - and they won't facilitate development of skill required to master the 460.

One day I hope I get their myself.

Good luck and be safe
