460XVR. Should I?

Speaking of the S&W 500 magnum. I noticed starline is now making a 500 special case for lower power target loads .

Any loading you do in a 500 Special case you can do in the standard case if your are a 500 S&W, you don't need these to make reduced recoil loads.

Now you don't have to cut 500 S&W downs if you have a custom chambered in 500 Special.

Should note they have been making the 500 JRH case for sometime now also.

be safe
Ruggy

Fun guns, but mine was too darn heavy to for shooting offhanded. I sold it and prefer a 44 or 357 for hunting.

as a female who owns a 3.5 inch, I say YES!

Its a lot of fun to shoot at the range with the big loads. Instant cease fire, and the men all pause and smile. Range attendants are always in awe. I have offered to allow them to shoot it, they all have refused. They would rather watch me squeeze a few rounds off.

Its one of my WOW factor revolvers for sure.

Willing to bet that my 240gr XTP's at 2,000 FPS from my 8-3/8" XVR are more comfortable to shoot than the loads you ran today in your Model 29. In my hands, of course, I certainly can't speak to how it feels in your hands.

I wouldn't bet against you on that

I luv big bore revolvers but..... if I can't do what needs doing with my 44mag, then I pick up a rifle.

This is one of the most repeated statements made anytime the question of hunting with a .460 Revolver comes up. Must mean lots of folks feel that way. Still, once you pick up a rifle, you are no longer "Handgun Hunting". Kinda like saying if you need anything more than a longbow to hunt with, you'll pick up a rifle. Guess what? You're not bowhunting anymore. You're now rifle hunting, and like playing guitar, any fool can do that. Many of us hunt with a handgun because of the challenge it imparts on the hunt, not because it enhances our chances of success. While a .460 revolver enhanced the odds of success when hunting distances of more than 80 yards with a handgun, it still doesn't make it as easy as any rifle. So whenever I see folks making this "I'd rather use my rifle" statement, I know they are not true "handgun hunters", just wannabes more concerned with making the hunt easy and consider the kill more important than the hunt.

As far as the 460 goes I thought it was a really awesome shooter. Heavy as hell but recoil was very manageable. Personally when I’ve shot 454 (and it was only once) I felt like that kicked harder. Maybe it was the gun or the difference in loads? .

It's absolutely the platform. The vast majority of 460 chambered Smiths are compensated and also generally heavier than other makes and models chambered in 454. Think about it, the 454 is a "mid-range" load for a 460 Smith. I would not want to shoot full legit 460 rounds from a Ruger Alaskan or even a longer barreled SRH. My bet is that it would be more than punishing.

Put it to ya this way, 454 level 240gr rounds from my 460V shown earlier in this thread are easier to handle than full house 240gr 44mag rounds from my 6.5" 629 Classic. According to S&W specifications, my 460V is 12oz heavier than my 629 Classic.

Well, if anybody is still interested, I made up my mind. I am picking this up tomorrow in a trade deal. I don't know a thing about the scope. A cheap BSA maybe? I'm not too concerned about a scope though. I may try to post better pictures when I have some better light. And now I have an excuse to start reloading.

Looks like fun! I'm getting ready to pull the trigger so to speak on a 460 also. Make sure that you ask about the rear sight if you can, since it's been removed for the rail. Let us know how it shoots..
