It's been a pretty good N-frame year so far for me. Try as I might, I can't find much in the way of flaws on this one. Very minor holster wear and slight SAT mark on the elevation screw. It will clean up nicely. That's my project for today. That and maybe get a picture of it with the 3 1/2" 27-2. From the mid-70s.

I'm told that my 5" M27 dates from the late 1960s.

Beautiful revolver. Now, let's talk about the stocks. Really interesting red hue going on. Is that for real, or "camera work" ?? Great gun, all around.

I'm holding it in my hands and even took it outside in natural light just now. No photoshop. Just the way they are. They do have a bit of rosewood hue for goncalo alves. S&W just got ahold of a nice piece of wood.

I got lucky and found this one on Gunjoker at a very reasonable price. Seller described it as "lightly used." What he meant was factory test fired only! (Sorry pics are out of focus.)

It was a 5" mod 27-2 that led me to this forum back in 2004. A buddy had one lnib w/ presentation case, tools, paperwork. $500 was his ask - seemed high to me so I joined forum and asked for advice - Boy did I receive a welcome! Bet I got 10 replies of "if you don't buy it would you tell me where" of course I bought it, still have it and for the past 18 years I've been on the lookout for 5" 27s and have several. Yes I'm a hoarder. :o :D

Here is a 5" 27-5 I picked up a couple weeks ago. Like new, wrong box paid $1100

While I cannot justify the money for one compared to other things for which I am saving, there is little doubt in my mind that the 5" 27 is pretty much the best of that .357 bunch. (I wish there was a clone in stainless; I dislike that full lug barrel for most purposes.) The barrel is long enough to get most of the performance out of the round; short enough to be pretty handy in a decent holster. Admittedly, my revolver days are winding down for most purposes, as my eyes really prefer a good red dot. It is not hard to get or set up an auto pistol with a red dot, but even to a pure function freak such as I, it seems a bit wrong to put a red dot on a revolver.
