I have one. It lettered as a Hill Country gun.
It's high on my list. I have a 5" 629, would very much like a blued one.
Hill country distributors were out of Kerrville Texas. They had a run of 500.
I personally think it’s one of the best balanced of all the Model 29’s
It will make you a great shooter and collectors piece!

That sure looks good in blue; I have the 5” stainless version and 8 3/8” 29-5.
Mine doesn’t have the unfluted cylinder and Iam happy about that. I am probably in the minority here, but to my eye the unfluted cylinder looks unfinished.

I know it's a very handsome revolver!!
Like a lot of us I prefer P&R but appparently Smith only started doing full lug barrels after they stopped pinning them. Maybe there’s an engineering/tech reason for it but who knows. Based on my experience with my now-departed 5” 686+ Talo, which is very similar except for size and chambering, I can see how it would balance so well in hand. I would definitely prefer CH4’s lovely combat grips on that blue for contrast as well although the goodyears are no doubt easier on the hands under full power loads.
Who the heck came up with that nickname for those grips anyways?

I call them condom grips.
I would really like to have one that is closer to new condition and with the box, but considering there’s only 500 of produced and it’s one of my favorite configurations. I feel blessed to have found it, especially for what I paid for it compared to today’s prices.

The smooth cylinder guns were a special edition run called the “Classic Hunter” edition. Not to be confused with the new “Classic” series of throw back pistols. Similar to/pre-dates the modern custom shop “Performance Center” run.

I believe the Classic Hunter had the adjustable front sight. I have a 6" Classic Hunter. This one is from the orginal Classic line from the 80s not to be confused with the last Classic line such as the 29-10. S&W keeps it confusing.
Anyway, confirmed this is a Hill Country one of 500 5" versions of the 29-4 Classic. Shipped on December 16, 1989 to Hill Country in Austin, TX.

Classic Hunter: 29-3 Lew Horton. 6 inch barrel (I replaced the original grips with these because they feel better to me)
Hill Country: 5 inch, 29-5 (I think)
