A quick review of Gunbroker completed auctions shows 500 rounds of Hornady 55 gr 5.56 going for approximately $350.
Still too high by double, but it seems that prices are going in the right direction.

Happened to be around for the weekly shipment at my local Sportsman's Warehouse and they had lots of 9 mm at an average of $20/50 rounds, no 38 Special (what I'm really looking for), and lots of 223/556 but that's still at about $0.75/round which is double what I'll pay for it.

AmmoSeek today
Lowest cost from "name brands" - but ignoring hype.
All are brass case, factory new from 4 star or higher vendors.

.223 (Federal) $10.50 / 20 ($0.53)
5.56 (Patriot Defense) $33.75 / 50 ($0.68)
.223 SP (PMC) $149.95 / 200 ($0.75)

9mm 115-124gr (Geco) $24.89 / 50 ($0.50)
9mm 134-150gr (Federal) $51.95 / 100 ($0.52)
9mm Hollow Point (Winchester JHP) $359.95 / 500 ($0.72)

Natchez had new brass case 223 and 5.56 for 55 and 57 cents per round today, respectively, and it lasted for hours before selling out. Definitely a sign of improvement.

My LGS is waist deep in ammo. They even had a good supply of 357 magnum. Prices have dropped a bit but are still 110 to 150% more than pre-pandemic. They said things have slowed down considerably. Still not a ton of guns around and still a pretty good wait for stuff that has to be ordered but it looks like things a trending in the right direction. I bought 2 pounds of powder at $48 per. Pretty stiff but I needed it and so I paid the premium.

I see MidwayUSA has both 5.56 & 9mm available. Both cost about 70 cents per round. Sounds like there are better deals out there, but if you don't have any ...

Edited to add:
Midway only has one offering for .38 Special. Federal LRN box of 50 for about $55! $1.10 / round! Yikes!

Big 5 Sporting actually had some .22lr Norma for $11.98 for 50 rounds. I bought all 5 boxes.
5.56 @ $25.00 for 20. Grabbed 2 of the 5 on the shelf.
This is Klownafornia where it's "See ammo = buy ammo" for the last year. Like finding Hens teeth.
No out of state ordering. All in person with my Passport + drivers license. Background check and a form for every caliber and amount sold signed by me and the sales clerk.

I never thought I'd see a time when someone would pay 1.10 for a 38 special round. Of course that might be why they have them in stock. I think we've reached the apex of this thing. The question is how long is it going to take to slide back to something close to reasonable prices?
