While I own two of them, I'm not really an AR guy.
I've been offered some ammo in trade for a gun I'm selling.

Federal 62 gr M855: everybody on-line is out. What's a fair current price?

Wolff Brown Bear: I'm not a fan of steel cased ammo. Anybody use this? Is it any good? Will it damage extractors and such? What's that going for?
Thanks.

I would skip the steel case in any AR that I own, others may differ, but it certainly still has a sell/trade value.

You are asking about a fair/current price on M855 -- well that's a massive debate all on it's own, isn't it? If you don't shoot them much (you said you aren't really an AR guy...) then buying or trading to get ammo for them at TODAY's current price is a fool's gambit.

I believe today it's going no cheaper than about 56 to 60 cents a round, and you'd need to buy in bulk an pay shipping and maybe tax on top of that.

If you're talking before the whole ammo world blew up, then 30 cents a round, maybe?

Can't help on a price for steel case, that's a never for me.

Ammoseek lists the M855 (no Federal available) at $0.55 per round.

As to steel, I have used it and never had any issue with it.

Well, there's the fair price, and then there's the current price -- and they are not the same...

IMO and only my opinion, the Federal brass case M855 ammo is good ammo. Him much you would need to ask for your AR depends upon which AR you own. How much did you pay for it?

I wouldn't offer more than $9/box of 20 for the Federal ammo. That is slightly below retail but he isn't selling from a store, he is bartering.

If your AR is worth $600 you should get 1340 rounds BUT, who knows if that ammo will be worth what is is now in 6 months? I would not make the trade, again only my opinion.

A few years back, 4 or 5 maybe, I put an AR together and decided to reload for it rather than buy new ammo. It was running .34/round for brass cased ammo, fmj 55 grain. I reloaded for half.

Myself, I wouldn't allow more than .30/round, maybe .35. We don't know where the ammo market is going but it's a safe bet it's not going below where it was back then.

Really, to me, I'd never trade hardware for consumables.

in trade.. 50 cents per round for brass M855 and 35 cents for steel case.. you aren't buying, you are trading... and I have never understood the don't use steel ammo thing.. go to any machine gun shoot and it is being pumped down range in guns that cost over 15 grand.. no issues... I stopped worrying about it a long time ago...

I'm not trading an AR. Its actually a fairly cheap Ruger I'm selling.
I just happen to own two ARs. Ammo was one of my trade options. But I don't want to risk damage with the steel case stuff.
Shot some Wolf steel case in my M1 Carbine some years back and it broke the extractor. I don't want to take chances again. So does the steel case stuff function in ARs well or cause problems?

Just bought 1K steel case 55gr / 5.56 it ran about .35 rd with ship. I just have Palametto AR, NIB bought on forum. Local AR jockeys tell me not to shoot the steel cased stuff. I don’t fool with ARs, just bought one because of the civil situation. I’ve loaded 223 for 50yrs. I’ve got several thousand brass the AR boys give me. I hate to do it but going to load up 500 or so.
I’ve also got thousands of 55gr bullets but are all SPs, HPs, ect. I would like to run into Mil Spec 5.56 at same price.

In that case, like I said above, I would value the Federal brass case ammo at $9/box of 20 and no more. Figure out the price you want for the Rugers and do the math. Like I also said above, he isn't selling retail, you are bartering.

What with the high price of ammo today, you should ask yourself this question. If I sell this ammo today, can I afford to buy back what was sold?. Or in other words can I afford to replace it. The emphasis is on afford. Frank
