I will only add to that advice by saying the rubber grips are a fine choice for shooting, however I would not recommend leaving them on for storage...Over time they will leave a nasty mark in the metal which may be very difficult to remove...I have a friend who inherited the 4" nickel 29-2 which his Dad carried on duty as a California sheriff's deputy in the 60's...It still had the Pachmayr grips on it which his Dad favored for comfort...When he took them off to see how it looked with the original target stocks, the rubber had left its damage on the finish, and no amount of his or my efforts would remove it...And being oversize Pachmayrs, the black smears on the nickel finish were outside the area covered by the originals, and were even more visible...

So the advice to shoot with rubber grips is sound, but after returning from the range, remove them, clean the gun properly and put those beautiful Cokes back on for storage...You can thank us later for that advice......Ben
Yes.
I got a 629 no Dash that had rubber grips on it when I got it.
They had welded themselves to the finish.
Fortunately, it was a 629, and not perfect original finish so cleaning the rest of the rubber off without worrying about removing nickel or blue was not a problem. I polished it up a little and it’s great, but if that was a blue or nickel, I don’t know what I would have done.

Welcome to the FORUM from Michigan! Yours is the 1st 5" 29 I've seen! I must say that is a BEAUTY! Have a 6" 29-3. Had a 29-2, 4" Nickel. Bob

Wow that is the gun I dreamed of owning. Back when I read Skeeter Skelton 5" Smith's were always on my mind. 27-2,29,24. Had some 27-2 but never the others. It got worse after I had the privledge to meet Skeeter, at an NRA convention, however brief it was. Your grandfather had excellent tastes. Don't tell the cousin what its worth she may become more difficult. I experienced that in handling three estates for friends and family.
