An original 5" nickel is probably worth upwards of $4000. A blue one sold on Gunbroker for that just last week. It must be all original, however. The one on GB had box if I remember.

Use all of your haggle experience, but if it is a factory 5" 29-2, do not leave the shop without it or post their name and phone number.

I am going to go with Richard on this but raise the ante to north of $5000.00 of the VERY few 5" guns there is only I would guess less than 2% that were nickel if that.

One quick way to tell if it is a factory nickel gun is it will have a blue front sight with exposed pins holding it to the barrel, like the K38 pictured below

I dont believe Smith made any 5" guns after they stopped this practice.
The factory nickel part is pretty easy to figure out, but the only way to find out about the barrel is a letter.

Sorry boys, it was a 6" after all.:( I did pick up a cherry Remy Model Four 30.06 though. Here piggy piggy!;)

sw282,

So if back in the days when you could call up Smith and special order a gun the way you wanted it, you called them and asked for a 5" Model 29. They agree to make you one and after searching the barrel inventory find they don't have any 5" barrels and cut down a 6" to install on the special order...you're saying that's not a real factory 5" gun?

Dang, you guys are a tough audience (LOL).

H.H. Harris ordered 500 back in 1958. They were shopped over a period of years up into the 60s and into the 29-2 configuration. There have been 2 or 3 found to be original 5" guns outside of this order. I don't think it matters how the factory made the barrel, for all I know, all of them started out as 6 1/2's . The important thing is that they letter as factory five inch guns. Doc 44 probably knows whether they were cut or not.

5" 29's

Folks the original 5" guns were forged barrels just like all of the other barrel lengths. The two recent ones that sold on GB were in fact cut barrels BY THE FACTORY due to the lack of forged 5" barrels. These guns are as factory as any forged barrel gun since the guns were cut BEFORE leaving the factory. I will get to see one of these guns soon and I am looking forward to it.

BTW if you want to throw something else into the mix, by all rights the 2 that sold on GB and were posted on this forum are far rarer than a HH Harris gun. They shipped with plain sights and lettered as such. These are the only 2 44 magnums I know of with this feature.
