A good friend of mine gave this gun to me to help him find out what model it is and the date of manufacture. I know that it is a model 27 (5 screw), but it doesn't say "27" on it anywhere. The serial number on the bottom of the grip frame is S 140469. The cylinder is stamped 140469 with an S to the far left. The frame is stamped X 54737 and the crane is stamped 54737. The barrel is stamped S 140469.

Also, Are the grips correct?

Does this sound correct? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Todd

I don't have the info you need but it sounds like an early pre-27, before they started numbering them, judging from the low serial number and the none relieved stocks.

Todd - that's a sweet pre 27 from 1955. The non relieved targets end about the same time.
Nice revolver.
Let me know if selling

Thanks

Yup thats normal those are the fitters numbers so that the crane and the frame are numbered for proper fitting theres also serial numbers under the extracter too and one of the grips 5 places in total you will find serial numbers. Very nice looking 1955 pre-27.

Thanks for the info guys!

Any idea what the value would be? I would rate the condition at approx. 90% or maybe a little better.

I don't think that he wants to sell it, but maybe he will change his mind when he hears what its worth???

Todd

Check the gun auction website like gunbroker.com and you can kind of figure there by averaging bids or buy it now prices. Also there is www.gunsamerica.com that is a selling and not an auction. Rough guess is minimum of about $700 to $900, maybe more.

Model numbers did not begin till 1957.

Target grips were SELDOM serial numbered. They are contemporary to that gun.
Serial numbers are found in five places on the METAL-
Frame Butt
Barrel
Cyl
Back of Extractor
Back edge of yoke (facing Cyl)

Assembly numbers are merely there to reunite the frame, yoke, and sideplate after bluing. They are applied because those parts are fitted BEFORE serial numbering. They have an undeciphered sequence, and are meaningless for describing a gun IF they all match, so there is never a need to include them when describing a gun, IF matching.
Hope this helps.

I bought a 5 screw 5" pre-27 in identical condition to yours from a forum member earlier this year. Mine has magna grips s/n'd to the gun, I paid $700.00. The non-relieved target grips may make your gun worth close to the $900.00 estimate.

Todd,
Your friend has a very nice Pre 27 there with a great set of grips. It should provide some enjoyable hours at the range.
