I've had a 50 A&E Desert Eagle and sold it. I have new Speer 300 JSP and 325 gr. JHP projectiles left over. Can those be loaded into 500 mag or 500 special cases and fired thru the S&W 500 magnum x frame revolver?
The projectiles are .50" diameter but dont have a cannelure for a roll crimp. The DE used a taper crimp. I dont expect to load them up to run as hot as factory 500 mag rounds just want to burn them up at the range. I'm concerned about bullet movement without a roll crimp. I'm not new to reloading but trying to find out if this is possible before purchasing the 500 mag. Thanks, CH

These projectiles work just fine. Even at 500 S&W Magnum velocity. I use the 300 grain IMI JHPs all the time. I have a few thousand of them left.

I also use the 275 grain JHPs that were intended for the 50GI cartridge since I had a few thousand of those as well. Can't find a picture right now

Buy yourself the FCD from Lee Precision. This is set up as a collet crimp since the use of the 50AE and 50GI projectiles that were already in the marketplace were on my mind at the time. There was also an issue with the Remington 385PLHP projectile as Remington produced this both with and without a cannelure under a single part number.

This die will make the cannelure in the projectile as it crimps the case.

Originally this die was Special Order only from LEE, these days it is a catalogued and stocked item.

I've not shot those Speer bullets in my 500ES but I'd think you shouldn't have a problem so long as you maximize bullet-case tension (minimal flaring/expansion) & give them a firm crimp.

My 500ES is the lightest 500 & when I shoot Berry's 350gr bullets they tend to jump crimp even with the reduced loads (partly because they're plated & partly because of their sizing) so I don't load more than (3) rounds at a time.

When I reload my 460 Carry with reduced loads of moderate speed powder, and non-cannelure bullets, I deep-seat the bullet so the crimp is over the bullet's ogive & I've never had one of those jump crimp even though it's a (relatively) lightweight 460 too. Just adjust your charge weight accordingly.

Cool, Thanks for the replies. Those look like the exact projectiles I have. I've use the Lee factory crimp die for my 45acp's. It works really good. Now I need to figure out which barrel length I want. Thanks again.

I also sold my Desert Eagle and have several hundred .500 325 grain projectiles. I was thinking of getting a 10-12" barrel for my Contenders, one like the "Classic Hunter" with iron sights and ported.

If you get a muzzle brake for that T/C barrel, I recommend getting one that you can take off.
This way you can shoot both with and without it.
You will not believe how much louder a brake can be especially in the larger cartridges.
Not too friendly at the indoor range (although I have done it when alone).
I wear both foam AND ear muffs.
