547 9mm

Very Nice 547 ,
You definately wont have trouble selling or trading that one .

I recently aquired a 3" round butt version,
Interesting that both have a pinned front site,
Also the barrel profile appears to be identicle to the older 4" Model 14-2 with no grooves machined in the rib.

The original configuration was the 4" square butt version,

1979 , 1 Test gun made
1980 , 100 four inch guns , 40 of the 3" RB's made"Pilot run".
1981 , 11 made.
1982 , 0 made.
1983 , 6486 of the 3" round butts were made "First full production run", ,
1984 , 3460 the majority were the 4" version.
1985 , 178 made.
1986, 3 made .

Total production of K frame 9mms from 1979 to 1986 is 10270 .
Production ceased in 1986 due to "Lack of interest and slow sales"

IMO S&W missed the boat by not offering a 4" target site version .... That would be cool.

Interesting. These are production dates? Per Roy, my pinned 4" with ser# 9D36942 shipped in July 1982. So it would be either a first year production gun or one of 11 total guns made the next year?

mag 318, please post the letter. It will be of great interest to 547 affeccionados.

In the mid 80s, I purchased a couple of 547s that came from Israel as surplus.

Interesting subject. I purchased one several months ago form my local shop It's the 4" SB verson with the pined barrel and extra pin above the firing pin. It came in a box with owners manual, cleaning kit and warranty card. By the way It's serial number 9D36937, 5 guns before yours. cost $400 out the door.

:eek::eek: buy a lottery ticket.!! :D that's an insane price!! I am green... And not from motion sickness!! Really.. Congrats !!!....on armed Robbery ! Really congrats! :)

I was at my friend's house, that happens to be my FFL, and (as usual) asked if he had any new toys to look at. He had a few semi-autos sitting around that I looked at, and then I spotted a S&W box laying on the floor. It was a little rough on the corners, and looked a little older than current production. I asked him what it was and he said it was a 9mm revolver. I asked if I could take a peek. He obliged, and I instantly began to drool. It was a blued 3" RB 9mm. I knew I wanted it just because it was a 3" RB. I knew nothing else about it. I figured he'd want $500 or more, and my wife would use it on me if I dropped $500 on another gun that I didn't need. (Yes, I'm dragging this out - LOL) We talked a while, and I finally asked what he wanted for it. When he said $350, I tried to hold my poker face as I said I'll take it. This is the FIRST time I didn't try to dicker on the price of a gun. I've seen all the threads here of the 3" RB guns and just love them. I've never had a chance to actually hold one, but they are NICE! The only thing wrong with this one is the Bantam grips that are on it. They feel great in the hand, and while shooting. I would like to get a set of RB target stocks for it, but I have a feeling that they will cost more than a set of custom wood grips.
After getting home, I started researching the 547 on this forum and found that I just made the best firearm purchase of my life. He knows I'll keep it, and I will shoot it. I'll just treat it a little more careful than the others. I don't know how guns are graded, but I'd call this one at least 90% based off of what I see posted here. The box has no tag on the end, so I don't know if it's original but the owner's manual is correct for the 547. I'm not trying to brag, but give hope to all that when you're not looking, sometimes a boulder of gold smacks you in the face.
PS. I bought it without asking the wife first. She didn't get too mad.

Welcome to the forum magnum711 and congrats on the great deal of a some what hard to find S&W.
And like ^^^he^^^ we need pictures to prove it happened.

WOW! Those are two really good stories! Thats gonna lower the curve on the value of these 547's a wee bit.......wait a minnit......here is my story. I have had this gun stuffed in my closet for about 6 years now, the origional owner had asked me to hold on to it as he was getting thruogh a gnarly divorce. No problem. At that time i had not known much about the gun at all, in fact when i saw it was a 9mm i kinda chuckled and wondered who in their right mind would want a 9mm Smith? I even thought it was kinda ugly. So i oiled her up and never looked at again until a couple weeks ago i stumbled over the case while looking for my bowhunting stuff. I got it out and did some research on the little sucker and just about pooped my pants.

So i proceeded to tell this fella how nice it was of me to have stored this "darn thing" for him all these years, meticulously caring for it and loving it and he asks me whats it worth........uhhhhhh......dead silence from me then he says that he has seen them on the web fo 300 or so and asks if that sounds fair. So i pull out every dollar that i have in my wallet and had exatcly 210 dollars......and he took it.

Gotta love it.

Great finds guys, i sent my letter to Jinks today and look forward to seeing the history.

Mbliss, i am in the canton akron area, funny we have those serials so close and how far those guns have traveled to get here. Cool stuff man.

Hello and welcome to the form. You were in the right place at the right time, now post photos then go buy a lottery ticket.

I bought one in June and then proceeded to break my leg and have yet to get it to the range.

Of the total 10,000 made probably less than 150 have the 4" inch barrel with the set pin like yours does ....

I've got a Model 547 that looks exactly like the OP's with the same exact configuration. SN is in the 9D370XX range.

Another poster mentioned he had a similar gun with SN 9D36XX that shipped July 1982.

The OPs SN is 9D376XX.

someone else posted this production list:
1979 , 1 Test gun made
1980 , 100 four inch guns , 40 of the 3" RB's made"Pilot run".
1981 , 11 made.
1982 , 0 made.
1983 , 6486 of the 3" round butts were made "First full production run", ,
1984 , 3460 the majority were the 4" version.
1985 , 178 made.
1986, 3 made

I believe there must be other 4" 547s that fill in the SNs between the guns listed, so there has to be at least 700 or so with this configuration. The only large batch of 4"ers was 1984, but 9D36XX was shipped 1982.

Something doesn't jibe here. COuld the list be a shipping list, not a prodcuction list? Guns were made for the French government, the contract fell through and they were eventually sold to the public?

Got my letter from jinks....

My 547 serial number 9D376XX was shipped from S&W factory on April 1st, 1982, and delivered to Wischo-KG-Wilsker & Co, Erlangen, West Germany. The revolver was shipped with a 4 inch barrel, blue finish and checkered walnut square butt grips.

Cool stuff.

That makes sense as the proof mark (the emblem in the middle, which has a checkered appearance) indicates it was proofed in the Munich proofhouse, you should have a similar proof mark under your barrel and on your cylinder as well. The other marks indicate it's been proofed with smokeless powder (the German eagle with "N" for nitro) and the proofer which proofed your 547. You really should keep that 547, there's few like them, and for a German proofed, pinned barrel, even fewer. I can't quite tell from the photo, but it appears the Munich proof house stamped the "P" after 9mm on the barrel. They do that in Germany because there are several cartridges of the 9mm caliber, 9x17, 9x18, 9x19, 9x21, just to name a few, and the 9x19 is referred to as "9MM Parabellum" (not "Luger" as in the US). I hope they stamped your barrel better than mine:

When proofing, the Germans will fire a 20% overcharged round, and to be accepted it must do this; they also inspect chamber sizes and dimensions very carefully. Literal proof that the 547 is a sturdy revolver, plenty good for +P stuff, though mine just gets regular.

It makes me a bit sad hearing the awesome prices some have gotten theirs for, I paid premium for one, and near premium for my German proofed one and consider myself lucky. If I had it to do over again, I wouldn't hesitate. Not sure it really cost S&W that much more to make them, but the 547 is my favorite, and that is saying a lot. I could go on and on about why I think 9x19 is so great in a revolver, but suffice to say S&W is just not going to make any more, and if they do, you can bet it won't be with this extraction system. I don't just think they are collectors, but serious shooters, especially considering the enormous amount of 9x19 ammunition selection which seems to have no problem standing the test of time.

M2mike,

yes, mine has the "p" after the 9mm. Thanks for your input on the German proofmarks and such, great info and certainly an interesting gun. I will be hanging on to this for awhile untill i get an itch to sell or trade. It is resting peacefully for now.

Good deal Buckeye. I'll warn you though, if you take it out and shoot it, you may find yourself bitten by the 547 bug. Note how sad Headknocker is about having to sell his.

I'll give you another picture to illustrate a point I've made from time to time; tekarra has seen this a few times. I won't even comment and just let the old addage of "a picture is worth a thousand words" do the work for me.
