gentlemen, just picked up a 4" 547. about 97% . anything i should know about this model ? $450 otd. ok price ? how about the extraction system ? reliabilty ? the extracter hooks are very small, how well do they hold up ? thanks.

I hate you. That is a great price and I need a 547 bad.
Congratulations! I found a 3" RB for $400.00 a few months ago and then found two speed loaders still in the blister packs. They are my prize possessions now. Good shooter as well. You are going to love it. If you can't find speed loaders the speed strips work well too. They only made a total of about 10,200. Most (7K or so) were the 3" RB and the remainder the 4" SB. You stole it. You lucky dog.

Great price on a really cool Smith. The only problem I have ever run into was extracting really tight cases and having the extractor slip up off the case rim.

That was a good price for the 547. May I suggest you search the forum as there are a number of good posts for the 547. I have not had a problem with the extractors on my 547s. As peyton says in post #8, you are obliged to post photos.

That's a terrific price, as far as I can tell. The extractors are very tough, mad of beryllium. I believe you can still get replacements if you ever should need them.
I corresponded with S&W about acceptable ammo and was told any commercial 9mm ammo up to and including Plus P.
Here are my tracks and chart for both versions of the 547:

The extractors seem to be pretty durable. I bought mine when they were new, and it is fine but I haven't shot more than a few hundred rounds through it. I used to run into a fellow at the range who had one with pretty high mileage. 9mm was his favorite cartridge, he always had 4 or 5 guns so chambered with him and he reloaded and shot 9mm by the bucket. He had shot all kinds of 9mm from all kinds of makers through his 547 without a problem with the ejector fingers. He had some stuff that was so hot that it wouldn't budge when he pushed in the ejector rod. He wound up using something heavy and beating on the rod (after removing it from the gun). The little fingers were driven through the cartridge casing heads! We ended up beating the fired cases out with a brass punch and a hammer, if I remeber it right, one at a time.
