568 Serial Number

Hi all, I have my eye on a used 586. I was told it was less than a year old and that it wasn't fired much. It's a local gun shop near me. Is there any way to tell from the serial number?

Since the last SCoSW #4 was published in 2016 there is no way for me to tell you a dom since your starting letters aren't listed in the catalog. Possible it's late 2015 though. Call S&W for help...Sorry

OP, ask the shop to see the box for the gun. The ship date will be on the label. Current production uses a regular date format (such as 040417 for example) vice the older julian dates.

Since 586 production ended ca 1999, what you are looking at would be a 586 from the Classic Series. IIRC, the engineering change is a -8, but relying on memory at my age is an iffy thing. The Classic Series 586 is still being produced. Product numbers are 150908 for the 6" and 150909 for the 4". Look at the frame under the yoke and see what engineering change this is and see if they have the case with the label, which will tell you everything you need to klnow.
