I recently acquired this 586, and would like to either clean-up the red plastic insert, or replace it with something more visible (assuming it's removable/replaceable). Do you folks have suggestions?

Regards.

thanks 500 M.N.

That does look like a fix, but I can't see spending $60 to replace a $0.0001 bit of plastic. The rest of the supplies would dry up before I could find a use. I guess my Plan B is to attempt to rehab the original sight with some sort of med/fine abrasive. If I mess it up, I'll yank it out and go cut up a bright orange slide stop/chamber flag (or whatever it is...see pic) that came with one of my S&W autos and epoxy it in place - of make a "dam" / form and melt it in place.

I'll post results of the debacle upon completion...:D

Regards.

Maybe try a small buffing wheel on a Dremel with the rubbing compound used to clear up the plastic covers (that have crazed over time) on car headlight assemblies. First tape off the surrounding area with some heavy tape.

Good idea B-Moose - I have a Dremel, and an Autozone nearby. I'll give it a try this weekend and report back with a success story, or a tale of woe ;) (with pics either way).

Regards.

My suggestion would be as follows:

CAREFULLY, under a lighted magnifying lamp, use a new single edge razor blade or scalpel blade (a miniature Arkansas stone might work also) to remove the "burrs", and then use some Flitz polish on a Dremel cotton buffing wheel to remove oxidation. Use masking tape or similar do you don't get any scratches on your barrel. That should bring your insert back up to as new condition. I would try this before trying to form a new one form your safety indicator, which will be a real pain and more than likely never fit quite right. I have done this on a few of my guns and it has worked very well. Don't remove anything more than the burrs or you will change the sight picture.

I've done many using tooth brush handles to cut a new insert.
