Wow. I can't help you much but that is one beautiful revolver. If I'm reading the SCSW correctly, I would place the year of production at 1997 based on the newer thumb piece. Give me the first three letters of the serial number and the dash number and I'll confirm that. I don't see any description in the catalogue of a 3" 586 with a non-fluted cylinder.

Sorry: I see you had described it as a dash 3. They ran from 1988 to 1994.

A factory letter may give the production number, especially if it was a special run for a distributor. Very nice.

For what its worth I have one just like it, thumb piece and all. When I got mine it came with a set of smooth targets like were on the mod 19 texas ranger comm with the stars for medallions. If you find out anything about it I'd like to know.

I have a 586-3 with a 3" barrel. Serial number is BSA30**. I purchased it used about 4 years ago. I dated it to 1993. My mind is failing, but I seem to remember doing some research and finding that a run of 500 or so was made, in the '93-'94 timeframe. Don't know if this was a Lew Horton run or not. I thought I paid a little too much, but I have never seen another one in person. My cylinder is fluted and appears standard 586 fare. I cannot remember which cylinder release thumb piece my gun has. I didn't give you much to go on, but hope it helps. Good luck!

That is most likely a special run for a large distributor. You have a strikingly beautiful revolver there.

About as rare as any modern Smith....

The 3" M586 (and the 2 1/2" versions) were made for RSR as I recall, and are about as scarce as any of the modern - pre-lock - L frames.
Included in this would be the .38 Special models made for export to Brazil, those are pretty cool variation as well.

Made the mistake of letting this one go to a friend about 14 years back, and out of nowhere he called me ~4 years back saying he wanted to sell it back, no hesitation on my part - was like winning the lottery.

Of course it needed to wear Spegels and a patridge front sight, now it's perfect.

Mine is a 1993, and is a 2.5 inch 586-4. SN BRF3XXX
Here it is with its best friend... an old 686 no dash.
I feel very fortunate to have this pair, and I realize that
any chance of finding either of these models in 3-inch are
about as likely as the sun kissing the moon.
