586-3 versus 27-3 for steady 357 diet?

For action games lighter is better. Get the 686. Or even better get the Model 66 instead.

All I can add to this is if you are looking at shooting sports then read up first on what the rules and regulations are to see if either model can be used. If either can be used then it's a coin toss which would work better as they both have their advantages and disadvantages. If you do get an N frame .357 and it's the standard six shot cylinder then be aware that the stop notches take a beating after a while from the heavy cylinder locking up during fast firing. The eight shot version seems to mitigate this being lighter and I would imagine if you get fast enough then the faster lock time may someday help out.

made my decision!

Picked up this used 686+ -5 4", next a 629 pro (as finances permit)
Thanks to ALL the helpful ideas and guidance from the forum members!!!

First time posting, long time lurker!
Glad I found this great forum for all things '80 to present S&W!
I am looking to purchase either a 586 (686) or 27 (627) for steady 357 use.
Length of barrel, 4" OR 6"?
Internal Lock discussions aside, which would be your first choice and why?
Stainless steel or blued finish for ease of cleaning?
Will be used primarily for punching holes in paper, may advance to beginners action shooting.
This is a new caliber to me for reloading, but I have shot a limited amount of 357, have collected 750-1000 pieces of brass.
All suggestions gratefully appreciated!

For steady use with magnum loads I prefer the N frames over the L frames. The 627 is however overly heavy. I'd look for a nice six inch 686. It would be of no concern if it were a pre or post lock revolver. Either would be excellent for use at the range, etc.

My conclusions also.
I have several hundred 38spl reloads from my past reloading, all stored in ammo cans with recipie notes. Kids, career changes and moves caused a reduction in revolvers. 640 38spl, dad's s&w model 19 22cal (approx '62 - '64 build) and my Ruger MK II ss heavy barrel target were all that were left.
Retired and getting back into reloadong/shooting, the 686 will be my re-entry into revolver shooting. For now, 38spl will be used till I can get a 627.
I also shoot & reload for my 9 mm Sig-Sauer P938 and M11-A1. First 20 rounds out of M11-A1 punched out the 10/9/8 rings of target @ 21 feet, not long distance, but first time shooting an auto so was getting familiar with it.
Also reload for wife's Bersa Firestorm with good results.
Again, tthanks to all members for exalent advice!

Theres a thread over on ''Cast Boolit Forum'' entitled '75,000 rounds thru my 27-2'....The auther is also a member of this forum...The count is likey well over a hundred thou by now...The pictures of his blued 5'' show only nominal wear...Personally l find blued guns are easier to clean for me.. The polished blue surfaces seem to come clean quicker(esp cyl) than the rougher surfaces of stainless and matte finish guns

Thanks for thread heads up!
A local estate sale has 2 blue 27's listed, will have to see them as far as barrel length & - numbers/condition, NO early sales.
Sale to be held later, possibly this fall, I WILL BE THERE!

You did good. Real good. Bring twice as much ammo to the range as you think you need, because this revolver will just eat .38 special all day and ask for more.

Now you gotta swap out those aftermarkets for some pretty factory wood. :) :) :)
