Hi, I'm a new member and I joined mainly because I recently purchased a 586-7 and was hoping to learn a little more about it. I looked it up in The Standard Catalog of S&W and from my understanding only about 300 of these were made. If that is the case should I treat this as more of a safe queen? I bought it on an impulse as a shooter as opposed to a collector piece. I was also wondering about holsters and speed loaders. Will a holster for a standard L frame fit this gun? I wasn't sure if the cylinder would be bigger since it holds 7 rounds, it measures 1.56". The only 7 round speed loaders I have seen are for the 686, will these work with my gun? Thanks for any info you can share.

Hi, as you noted yours was one of the last 586s produced. I believe the cylinder is the same diameter as the 6-shot ones, and the spacing of the 7-shot 686 charge holes is the same so speedloaders for it should work fine.

As far as keeping it unfired, I'd say for this particular gun, collector interest should not keep you from shooting it - it is pretty rare but relatively recent production. Your great-grandchildren may get mad at you for using it though

the only difference in a 586 and a 686 are the finishes, 686 being stainless of course and that is one of the finest 357 mags you can own so go shoot and enjoy the hell out of it!

Cool! Thanks for the replies. I definitely intend to put a bunch of rounds through it, and once I find a holster I like I plan to add it to my carry rotation. Up until now, while I've owned other revolvers, I've always carried autos so I thought I would give a wheel gun a try.

Your 586-7 was a special run that they made for the Sports Authority Group. There were 2000 6", and 2000 4" model's made.When Sports Authority got out of the handgun business they were selling them off at, I think $412. I bought 1, and had an option for 8 or 10 more.They also had the 686 for the same price.They are nice revolvers.

I ended up with one a few months ago in a trade. It shoots very well. Take it out and have some fun.

Shoot it! And congratulations. I'm looking for a 586 as I prefer blued. Don't know why S&W doesn't bring this back. Hopefully they will.
