I've been blessed to come into two beautuful 586's in the past year at very good prices. One is a no dash and one is a -1. Can someone twell me the mods that went into the -1, and I'm also interested in members oopinions on if one is more desirable? Both are 4" . I'll see if I can post a pic . They're gorgeous twins but even in the picture they look different.

thank you!

The main modification....

The dash ones had a recall to replace the firing pin and bushing because SOME guns locked up, at hot loads probably due to soft primers. If you send it to them they will fix it for free. I have a no dash and haven't bothered to get the recall done. I haven't needed it. I use domestically produced primers like CCI, Winchester, etc. They are plenty hard enough.

There's little practical difference. The 586-1 has the floating hand and radiused studs, both minor lockwork stuff. The 586-2 incorporated the updated firing pin and firing pin bushing in the frame, which was what the L frame recall was all about.

Check your frame, on the yoke cutout, below where the barrel screws in, where the model number is stamped. If yours has an "M" stamped there, it has had the recall update.

As for if one is more valuable than the other, it is hard to say. Collectors always prefer the earliest version all other things being equal. If they are both still unfired, in their original boxes with all of the original paperwork, the earlier one may bring a slight premium, but these guns are not really collectors items yet, being fairly recently made. Yes, I know, recent is relative.

Just to be clear - both the 586/686 and the 586-1/686-1 models were subject to the FP bushing recall. Otherwise the small differences were enumerated by BUFF in post #3.

With both you will be getting no MIM and no IL - if that is important to you. Even if not to you, it increases your customer base, should you decide to sell it in the future.

Adios,

Thanks to all of you for the info. Both do have the M stamped so have been through the recall mod. This lady post from Pizza Bob I don't get though as what is MIM and Il please?

MIM is Metal Injection Molding and is currently used by S&W for parts like the trigger, hammer and cylinder release (probably other parts as well. The parts thus made are very precise and require little, if any, finish machining. Some people dislike the use of MIM parts, personally, I'm fine with it. MIM came into general use with the 586-6 engineering change (although the 586-4 Brazil Contract 586's used MIM triggers and cylinder releases).

IL is the internal lock - again many non-fans.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

Man get em both once you buy one you gonna want another one. I past on 6in 586 earlier this year (too high) but I'm looking!
