Wandered into a local shop last year and saw a blued four inch .357 with too many holes in it. Took a look and it turned out to be a N.I.B. 586 plus seven shooter with wood combat grips. Now this was before I had found this forum so I bought it, shot it and found that the grip horns were very sharp and removed a lot of skin and flesh off of the first knuckel of my thumb so I just sawed off the offending horns, filed the top of the grips to a founded profile and was happy! Until I found out the 586+ was a bit scarce! Now how scarce is this one and how badly did I screw up by modifieing the stock grips? Sorry no pic, no camera! Thanks in advance!

Hi Gib, yup the same. I dont want to give anyone the idea that I go around hacking up S&Ws. I am primarily a shooter who modifies guns to suit me. But I do realize that on the more hard to find firearms we are but caretakers and should preserve em for the next guy! Read somewhere that S&W made relativly few of these models and regretted the chop job on the grips! Guess I figured that I found this one new on the shelf it was common but still dont know about that yet.

I have one of the 4" versions, they were made for the Sports Authority group of stores. They made 2000 4", and 2000 6" revolvers. They are nice L frames.

You should be able to still get them from Smith. I bought my 586 with rubber grips and called Smith&Wesson with my serial # and they sent the wood grips out to me. If not, call Altamont (spelling?) they make them.

Thanks for the info fella's! I guess a 2000 gun run doesn't make it rare but I'll get aholt of Smith and get a set to toss in the box!
