586 round butt

Ran across this little over a year ago. Not really a round butt grip fan but it's grown on me and have found a square since so have both. Cocobolo grips by Kurac.

Nice,
A 4' Model 586 (no dash) with a round butt grip frame is uncommon,
Is it actually 586-4 as those are conversely uncommon with a SB grip frame.

I realize it's a -4. I still haven't seen many and the ones I have seen have the MIM cylinder release.

I'm a round butt fan...... several years ago came across a "minty"..LOL 4" 586....... at a great price..... before buying asked to pull the rubber grips to check for rust (been known to happen)....... when I saw the round butt never sat it down!!!!!!! Mine dates to 1996.


Can't be that many out there as they were only made IIRC 95-97 and 686 were way more common than 586s.

Nice grips ..... smith combats never fit my hand .... mine wears Spegel "Extended Boot Grips" in Birdseye maple!

I believe mines 95. It came in with the rubber grips also.

Jrandyh, your gun is beautiful. Kuracs cocobolo combats are just stunning. I'm on the list for next batch, can't wait! I wish I could upload photos from my phone but can't figure out how, I have the exact same 586-4 set up with S&W factory combats. Thanks to forum member Mike. IMHO the 586 with 3-4" barrel is the best looking revolver made. Just an opinion, not a fact. Awesome gun.

I have my photos in a picture hosting forum. You might try Instagram or photo bucket. Get a link to the photo and paste it in the little yellow picture icon on the reply box. I erase the http info already in it as my link will post it again. At the end of the link I type .jpg since that's the pic format. Then I post it.

Thanks for the tip. I've seen a few 586-5 and all had the mim cylinder release. I have only seen 4 586-4 and all but mine had the mim release as well. Mine does have the older forged release. I think they were transitioning at the end of the -4, and some got the newer release. Again beautiful gun. My grips just came in yesterday but since I've already got a pair on the 586 these are going on my 3" cs1, absolutely stunning!

The 586-4 started production with square butts and then S&W switched to the round butt with groves sometime in very late '94/early '95. All 586-4 guns are pre-MIM. The switch to the new style cylinder thumb piece came later so there are RB guns with both styles.

This is also true of other Smith revolvers as they standardized on the RB frames.

The 586-4's are very rare birds! I've been looking for one for a while.

I have one of the 4" 586-3 RB matte finsh limited run guns from 1989. One of my favorites.

I also have a 4" 686-4 RB w/new style thumb piece and a 4" 66-4 with the old style thumb piece.

Just to clarify the "New style" thumb piece is MIM so kind of a matter of nonmenclature saying a revolver with a MIM release is "Pre MIM" as its really "Pre MIM Internal parts".

The L frame transition went from forged parts up to the dash 4 revision, then later production has forged internals with a MIM cylinder release, The dash 5 has MIM internals with an internal firing pin and the final phase is the dash 6 which has all MIM internals with the IL.

That's why I reference 'Old' and 'New" style thumb pieces to avoid the MIM confusion.
