586 takes on ugly stick...and looses. A rescue story.

A hundred sixty bucks for a 586 that works?

I'd have been on it like ugly on a baboon's butt.

I'd probably scrape off the barnacles and Cerakote or hard chrome it, and I wouldn't be afraid to carry it in foul weather.

I shouldn't have looked at the pictures. my eyes! the goggles do nothing!
for 160 bucks though it's fine. a pawn shop up here has/had a 586 that was more bare steel than bluing, basically yours minus the pitting, and they were trying to get 575 for it.

I don't think I have seen a 586 in worse condition. For $160, I think you did ok. It looks pretty pitted, so a polished finish will never look good. If you decide on a refinish, I'd say bead blast and blue or bead blast and hard chrome.

Send it to the factory for refinish, maybe they will feel so bad for it they will do it for free. :)

I have learned the hard way in other areas of interest that items are only original once and patina can't be faked.

I'd stop further deterioration and love it as it is.

You will be at the forefront of knowledgeable custodianship.

Collectors of the future will thank you.

Picked up a similar deal last week.
An older cousin. Bore, lock-up, timing and
inside parts as new.

I am still undecided what I want to do with it.
Been thinking of a.... "FITZ Special".

Personally, I would probably have passed, even at that low price. It would just drive me crazy to have a 586 that has been put in that condition. Having said that, I would really be interested in pictures after you have finished with it.

Xfuzz, I recognize that 27 from gunjoker! I looked at it a dozen times over the weeks and almost bought it twice. I fear though, I may have gone down a darker path with this one. Only range time will tell. Soon...

You know, you expect to see finish issues like that on a 75+year old gun, maybe. It's hard to believe a gun that was made in 1981 at the oldest could get that bad in 37-38 years.

Not hard for me, you should see some of the guys in my graduating class, they were made in '80-'81.
For $160, you can spend $250-$300 on a refinish and still get most if not all of that back if you decide to resell.

someone mentioned the possibility of the gun being in a fire which I find worrying. I had a 686-5 as a toolbox gun when there was a fire in the shop. It was in a low drawer which helped but it still had a crazy pattern on the side facing up. The rear sight rusted almost immediately even though the toolbox never got sprayed with water. The first time shooting it afterwards I had it in a vice with a string on the trigger. .38s first then .357s with a graduating charge. It's all good now, Maas polish and oil for the whole thing and it looks great. It now resides in the safe since I think it earned a spot with all the pretty Smiths in there.
