I have been thinking of getting a S&W auto . The 5906 and 4006 is what I'm thinking of. I'm a revolver guy and only have experience with .22 cal. auto's like my m-41 ,622,and 22a all very accurate . I have been told stories of their inaccuracies and accuracy . I want one that is has adjustable sights and I will reload for it . So can you guys give me the low down on these guns ?

the early ones had the 'square' trigger guard and adjustable sights the later mods had rounded tg's and fixed 3-dot sights.
accuracy is obtained by - practice, same as getting to carnegie hall.
get the 9mm the mags swap w/a kel-tec carbine.

I have a 4006 with adjustable sights and a 5906 with fixed sights. The 5906 is a laser. The 4006 not as much. I much prefer the fixed Novak sights over the adjustable ones.

I carried a 4506 for years (1995-2000) and it shot decent out of the box, but with a professional trigger job and tune up it shot exceptional..almost in class with my 1911's...(almost). But I was happy enough to carry it daily as a policeman and trust it. Good luck!

5906 Accuracy

Well here's mine from the other day shooting Federal Champion 115g FMJ @ 25' offhand, no rest. I re-spring all my S&W auto's when I purchase them with Wolff service pak that retains all factory spring rates. This is the first time I shot the Federal's and so far they are the best. PMC's and Speer Lawman are good too. Hope this helps. BTW- that is a fifteen shot group.....

If I remember, the regular production 5906's were often described as, at worst, being 3" to 4" guns. Some of them shoot quite a bit better. The Performance Center pistols, and some rare customs, shoot a lot better. When the target version was made for sale in Europe as the Target Champion (with limited sales here as the PPC-9) - it came with a factory target of an inch or less.

These pistols are as tough as a rock, and are the definition for the word "reliable".

Not as popular today - considered old and heavy. Hah! May I please have a '66 Mustang? And if I lose five pounds from my gut then that two pound pistol will carry easier. :)

I carry a 4006TSW in the spring and fall and summer and a 4566TSW in the winter. Both are extremely accurate. When we do our quals the only difference in my shot groups at 25 yards vs. 3 yards is no more than one inch and I consistantly out shoot everyone in the dept and I'm the 2nd oldest one next to the Chief. My guns are kinda old but they seem to get better with age. Other than the occassional bobble when they were new, the guns go bang every time I pull the trigger.

I have both a 5906 and a 4006 with Novaks. The 4006 out shoots the 5906 ten to one. The 659 with adjustable sights does better than the 5906 but still doesn't shoot as well as the 4006.
