5906 Hammer Dropping During Slide Release

Good evening,

I purchased my second 5906, a LE Trade in 5906TSW. During a slide lock reload, after inserting the magazine and releasing the slide, the hammer falls and the gun goes into DA. Any ideas on what is causing this issue?

Also, the gun has FAA markings etched on it. Does anyone know if the FAA LE arm used 5906s in the past?

Thanks!

Just from releasing from slide lock. No other issues with decocker function, trigger releasing hammer, or loading with slide closed on empty chamber and racking one in from magazine.

So - just to be clear - if you insert a loaded mag, slide forward, then pull the slide back and release it to chamber the first round, the hammer stays back?

Sounds like it may be a worn / damaged hammer sear. Releasing the slide with the slide release jars it a little more than working the slide by hand. Try pulling the slide back (on an empty gun with no magazine), locking it with the slide release, then releasing it with the release. Also try cocking it, then pushing on the hammer with your thumb. If the hammer falls in either instance, it needs repair.

Safety lever down or up when this happens?

John?

Safety lever is up.

Yes, it releases hammer even with empty gun. I was leaning towards a worn sear/damaged hammer hooks myself, but wanted to confirm with others before purchasing the parts.

Hello, that sounds like a worn sear for sure. I just had one of my 645's repaired for the same thing. Parts are available but you might have to wait a couple weeks. If you cannot find help wherever you are pm me and I will go to the guys that repaired mine and see what I can do for you.

Aside from a damaged/worn sear or hammer SA hooks, I'd also check for a weakened/damaged sear spring.

If it's the sear spring (curled at top, not keeping enough tension on the sear's tail; or cracked & split lengthwise, resulting in insufficient tension), it might also create unintentional 'doubles' or bursts at some point. Not good to have happen.

If a former armorer may have peened the sear spring pin (to try and keep the spring from shifting up or down under the pin), it may have cracked the spring, and may not be easily visible. That can damage the pin, too, and while the sear springs are still relatively easy to order, some of the sear spring pins aren't. (In fairness, the sear spring pins have hardly ever been known to 'break', so it's not like anyone really needs to keep a supply of them on hand.) Reinstalling a pin requires some judicious tension on the 'front' end being drifted back into the frame, to shift it 'down' (or 'forward', after passing over the center of the spring) and into the opposite pin hole in the frame. I've been told this is done via a jig fixture at the factory. It takes some attention and effort to do by hand ... especially if an aluminum frame is involved and you don't want to damage the pin hole.

I've had good luck gently flexing the sear spring to add more tension without even having to remove it from the frame.

Good afternoon gentlemen,

Just an update. I put in a low profile hammer and new sear and all is well now.

May be a dumb question, but where do you order parts from? I picked up a really nice 5906, but I don't like the sights. Thanks in advance.
