I just acquired a 5906, but it only came with one mag. I looked locally in several Pawn shops in Ashville, NC and no one had any factory mags. So… what aftermarket mags do y’all recommend for a 5906? Any to avoid? Thx.

I second the MecGar mags - but prefer the older all metal sleeve and plastic baseplate (blue only?) but available in 10, 15, & 17 rd versions - no experience with the newer version with 2 part metal / plastic sleeve.

Only MecGar or original S&W. I have reason to believe MecGar is running way behind on production, like many places. Greg Cote LLC is a great place. Get on his back in stock mailing list for them. MecGar makes flush fit 17rd ones for the 59 series, which work quite well.

Thanks for the advice. I checked the trading post site - no 5906 mags showing there right now. I’ll definitely avoid the ProMag, and will look at the Mecgar.

Thanks again.

Factory 5906 mags are usually available at the gun shows here, Mechgar almost certainly, you might want to check eBay.

There is another manufacturer that offers a 5906 magazine. Keep Shooting had one made by United Defense. I got one in a trade from a forum member. I haven’t used it yet. It’s nickel not stainless, but otherwise identical to an OE mag.
Smith & Wesson Model 59 Magazine - Holds 15 Rounds of 9x19mm Parabellum Ammunition | Keep Shooting

Picture is identical to SW OE mags incl S marking on sleeve - wondering if the one you got is so marked and what baseplate looks like - are they perhaps the OE manufacturer.

Anyone know anything about United Defense Mags?

As to Nickel vs Stainless, I have some late S&W 5906TSW mags (Pistols dating to 2008 - purported to be S&W OE mags with SW marked baseplate that appear to be nickel rather than stainless) - did SW switch to nickel?

But they are sold out too.

Listing attached taken from MecGar web site - All the MecGars appear to be out of stock. Maybe some of the retailers still have stock but you may pay higher prices (prices listed are direct from MecGar - lower numbers are blued version (which are the only ones I have seen).

When I get a chance, I’ll dig it out a do a side by side with an OE.

if you're still looking i have 2 or 3 factory 5906 mags i'd be willing to sell.
expect the cost to be more than the meggar prices.

Side by side with what I thought to be a United Defense nickel mag. Looks more like someone polished a S&W restricted mag.

I have several bright 5906 mags and as well as the older duller version - all with S&W logo on baseplates - some LE , some not LE.

Doubt they were all polished as they came from different sources with different pistols.

Thinking SW may have changed alloy to put more nickel in the stainless or changed source during later production, maybe Houlton ME vintage or maybe post 2000 when most 3rd generation pistols were discontinued.

I would still like to see one of the United Defense mags that claim to be made to SW specifications especially if they match the pictures with S on shell.

If you google United Defense magazine quality, you get a real mixed bag of quality reports. Safest to stick with genuine S&W or MecGar.
