It was a good day today. I went to a LGS and found exactly what I was looking for. No, that's not true, I found MORE than I was looking for. I had sold my only shooter 9mm and have been in the market for a 5906 to replace it. Over the past six months I've seen a few in the stores and pawn shops but none of them were quite nice enough or the prices were not good enough. That changed today. I found this 5906 with spare mag, box and documents in pristine condition. After negotiations ended I was able to purchase it for $525.00. Not cheap but I was not going to leave without it.

I don't think this gun was ever used. The old oil had hardened and was somewhat difficult to clean off. Using Hoppes #9 I could not find ANY residue in the barrel. It is definitely the "newest" used gun I've ever had the good luck to purchase.
An added bonus is that my "Tom Threepersons" holster for my 4516-2 from El Paso Saddlery fits perfectly!

This gun was purchased to use. I baby all my guns and I'm confident I can keep it in optimal condition while enjoying the virtues of this 21 year old beauty. My only other experiences with 3rd gens are my 4516-2 and my 4506 no dash.

Man, you did good! Good looking pistol. I have a TSW variant, & I like it a lot. The 5906 series aren't finicky about ammo, either. WWB, Remington, it all works pretty good. You'll have fun with it at the range.

That's a beauty! I'm looking for a nice 5906 and everything I've seen is way overpriced for the condition.

Very nice!!

At $525 I wouldn't have left without it also. Pristine condition, box and adjustable sights. I love those sights !!

….who makes those great looking wood grips? and what do they cost?

The polished wood grip variant of the 5906 would be product code 108255, only made in 1993. I'm sure the grips have been discontinued (bummer).

Super score! Mine also looks brand new.Either that or they are made indestructible.Any chance of providing some info on that holster?

Thanks coltle6920. The holster is from El Paso Saddlery and the model is "Tom Threepersons". They are nice fully lined holsters and not very expensive. The way they fold over and stitch the liner to the outer leather is quite nice and they will fit a 2.25 inch belt and that's getting hard to find these days. They'll make them for just about any gun. I think mine was $82.00.

Unfortunately I know nothing about my 5906.:o Looking through the S&W book I found nothing that made sense to me to identify my semi. The serial number starts with TZT and I couldn't pinpoint that either.I like the grips that came with it but don't know anything about them. Can't even focus anymore trying to research it!

When I originally posted my new purchase I was hoping for someone to be able to tell me what I had but so far no luck.I haven't even shot it yet.All I know is that people who own them say they're built like a tank and will eat anything you feed it.

I've stocked up on mags and ammo and will be outdoors soon giving it and myself a workout. No doubt about it the 5906 was one of S&W's best ideas.

Thank you for the link.I'll definitely check it out!

Coltle6920,

I checked your TZT prefix in the SCSW and it appears your gun is from 1993. Also, if you check the product code 108255 on page 316 (as provided by skjos) your gun was a "stocking dealer special" with high polish finsish with wood grain Xenoy grips from 1993. Beautiful gun!

Nice bit of research you shared. Thx.

You don't have to track down these particular grips to achieve a similar result. If you Google hydrographic printing and gun stocks you will turn up a bunch of companies in the business of selling hydro drip or water transfer printing services that can be easily done on plastic grip. I've thought about trying this for a while, but have just been too lazy to act it.

Great looking specimen!

I actually have my 5906 sitting in front of me right now--freshly cleaned after a (snowy/wet) range visit a few hours ago. It's quickly become one of my favorite shooters, and seems to find it's way into my range bag every time I head out there.

Just a tip: first time out with mine, the RH safety lever found it's way to the grass and I never found it. Finally got a replacement lever, spring and detent from a member. I noticed (A.) the detent doesn't sit all the way into the lever and (B.) the spring only applies minimal pressure on it. I opened up the hole in the lever so the detent sits completely in. I also bought a longer, heavier spring to put more tension on it.

With parts impossible to find (it's discontinued) it might be worth looking into making it better so you don't find yourself in the same sinking boat I did.

Wait.....wasn't there someone here who found an outfit they would apply the woodgrain to a standard grip? It was called hydo-graphic or something similar.

Nice find!!!
