5906 "Super 9" Information

I just acquired a Super 9 which is listed in the beginning of the thread. Shot 50 rounds through it but would like to replace the recoil spring. Does anyone know the part number of the spring?

If you have an updated picture you would like added to the thread, please post it or PM me and I will make the update. Thanks

Super 9 has long guide rod.

long guide rod light spring #20071
Long guide rod heavy spring #24298
Short guide rod light spring #24917
Short guide rod heavy spring #6048

Tom

PN# 200710000 (currently all S&W PN# have 9 digits)
is the same as the 4506 (5" bbl.) "wadcutter" recoil spring (??#).

PN# 060480000 (the leading zero is significant)
is the standard 5906 (4" bbl) recoil spring, 14#

Can you explain what you mean by a "long" & "short" guide rod?

Also, what are PN#s 24298(0000) & 24917(0000)? They don't appear in the S&W Parts Catalog.

. . . . .

Wouldn't a Super 9 equipped with a 356TSW barrel have needed a heavier recoil spring for it?

In my "unscientific home" test a factory recoil spring in my 3566 Limited (5" bbl.) was equivalent to Wolff's 15# 4506 recoil spring (#47315).

A 5906 recoil spring (#060480000) in it has significantly less measured force (4#s).

Guide rods

They interchanged guide rod length. My super nine has the long guide rod.

Pictures are PPC 9's to show the different lengths.

356 TSW reloading data review

...I have found some shells though BUT in order to get it approved I would need the OFFICIAL recharging tables for powder. I'm not into reloading but I presume they mean the specific data sheet for powder for 356TSW. Who can help me (with as many data sheets as possible to increase my chances) to find the data sheets for a common powder type!!

I'm not sure if this will help or not, but the "Cartridges of the World" book points to two sources of data, maybe you can get something official from there. See attachment (in post 100).

I know this is an old post, & I'm not knocking the effort to help a fellow enthusiast/collector/handloader, but I thought it important to qualify the handload data shown, 9.1gr/VV-3N37, for the 356 TSW cartridge.

The potential problem (I see) with this data is that no COAL" is stated with it.

SAAMI specs for the 356 TSW state the max. COAL is 1.160" for it.

In my 3566 Limited I load mine to no longer than 1.155" to ensure they feed properly in it's 9x19 M5906 style double stack magazine as 1.160" long rounds tend to stick on occasion when feeding.

I do not handload using 3N37 but I know it's very close to Power Pistol in it's burn rate, which I do use mainly, and 9.1gr is more than my max & would appear to be an overload.

SAAMI max pressure is listed at 50K psi for the 356 TSW.

QuickLOAD calculates 9.1gr/3N37 with 125gr JHP @ 1.160" COAL would be approximately 71.4K psi.

I believe the referenced data was from Jeff Maass who has compiled many IPSC Load Data sheets, for various cartridges, & can be found by doing a internet search.

However, I was unable to find an IPSC Load Data sheet for the 356 TSW by Jeff Maass but I "believe" that data likely originated from his 2001 9x21 IPSC Loads List sheet (below).

In fact, that exact load, W-W 124gr FMJ, 9.1gr/3N37 at 1446fps is listed in it, BUT, the COAL is 1.250".

In QuickLOAD a COAL of 1.250", using this recipe, yields an estimated pressure of 46.8K psi, much safer. :)

A COAL of 1.250" would work fine in a large frame pistol (1911, etc.) but is too long for the 9x19 sourced Super 9 or 3566 pistol magazines.

356 TSW cartridges loaded to 1.160" COAL using 3N37 & a 125gr JHP would need to use a reduced charge to be safe.

Very nice and informative OP, but I think that I will stick with my ordinary 5906s until I get that winning lottery ticket. Thank you for the thoughtful post.

I purchased mine on 9 June 2000

I purchased mine on Gunfinder.net from Cliff & Janet Crippin from Hemlock MI. I’ve been thinking about selling it. Multiple barrels. I probably have the original case/box and maybe some ammo. I’d have to take a look.

New information in the original post sparked by the recent sale of Super 9 TDM9476. This serial number had a unique product code (148662), and had me diving into German websites for information on muzzle weights.

I was lucky to have acquired a Super9 at auction a few years ago at a nice price, but it only came with the 9mm Parabellum barrel. I managed to obtain a 356TSW barrel from Midway, but no such luck with a 9x21 barrel. Any recommendations where I might find a 5" 9x21 S&W barrel, or anyone with a spare 9x21 barrel looking to sell? Thanks in advance!

That is very cool. Thanks for sharing.

I had the opportunity to pick one up in 2010 for under $1100 with all three barrels. Two barrels remain wrapped in the original S&W paper. Pics attached.

Smith-Wesson forum no longer allows older original posts to be edited without going through a reporting process and having one of the admins make the updates. This method is a little cumbersome, so to make it easier to complete updates, I have mirrored the forum information onto a webpage. The original post will remain, but future updates will be made on the webpage only.
