I really like my three 39-series Smith autos as well as my 59 and 459 (and 908). But I traded my 5906 last year....it was just seemed too big for my hands and almost too heavy.

Now I sort of regret getting rid of it and am considering replacing it. But I was thinking perhaps of a 5904....lighter, I like blued guns, and with the plastic stock grips, a bit thinner than the Pachs I had on the 5906. (I find the regular 59 and 459 seem fit my hands better. Not sure if its physical or just in my head.)

Anyone want to take a shot at comparing the two....or is the difference just mechanical and perception.

Also, anyone know of someone with a 'deal' on 5904s? I let some 06's go buy in the fall that were running around $350, which I thought was a good price. Now I think I'm after a 5904 or 5903 but can't find them except on Gunbroker. (I've got to do a phone search of my LGS's here in Seattle area).

thanks in advance.

5906

Physically and mechanically identical unless modified in some way. It would come down to which you like better in terms of appearance. I personally like the stainless models better, because they resist oxidation and the finish is easier to restore. (easier to remove scratches and blemishes)

The photo shows example of an older police 5906 that I re-habbed by replacing the internal springs, rear sight and grips, then blasted with silica.

I got a 5906 from Precise Shooter (75th & Aurora, 206-489-4907) a few months back. He had at least one other then, and said he'd probably be ordering more. Didn't mention 5904s, though.

If you talk to the owner (Soly, short for Solyanik), tell him DocNugent sent you.

Doc, I called Soly before I posted this....I know he had a bunch of 5906's but apparently he's sold them. The fella I spoke with said all they had left were 59's...and I've got one of those already. The search will continue.

Don't forget, you can use the straight back grip on these guns. The same grip that's on the 915/4006/etc. It makes a difference in the feel if the standard curved grip feels too big.
