Hello,
I just bought a used 5906TSW, a stainless 9mm with black decocker, rail and trigger. I know I can get a new grip, but can anyone tell me how or who would be able to reapply the black coating to the mentioned parts. I don't think it is possible to take out any Knicks or scratches.

Gracias

Black hardware on 3rd Gen guns are MIM, so in theory the color should go all the way through. I've never scratched my MIM hardware enough to see if it really does or not

Trigger, hammer & sear yes, those are MIM.
Safety body, ambi lever, magazine catch nut, and slide stop are black oxide treated 400series stainless steel.

The MIM surface looks no different than wrought steel after stoning or polishing. Just shiny silveryish.

The big difference is the case depth on MIM parts is very VERY thin so without due care you can completely cut through the case hardened layer by stoning or polishing. That results in a wonderfully smooth action job which lasts about three days.
(only applies to the lockwork ie. hammer, trigger & sear)

Cheers

I defer to and appreciate your expertise. You are pretty much the final word on smithing the 3rd Gens.

Need to add a correction to my last...

Regarding Triggers and Hammer on 3rd gens...

MIM parts will always be blued/black.

If you see a MIM part that's greyish or silverish color, that's a "green" or raw part that was never final heat treated. Don't use it. If you poke around in the miscellaneous section @ Numrich you may spot some of those.

Wrought Steel parts...

Can be high polish blued, matt blued/black, or flash hard chrome plated. There are no stainless hammers or triggers. These are all case hardened high carbon steel, 4140 or some such I presume.

In any case, no matter whether MIM or steel the hammer and sear are to be of the same material, ie. if the gun was equipped with a MIM hammer it should also have a MIM sear.

Oh, And to the OP...

That scabbed on rail on your 5906TSW is anodized 6000 series aluminum. For minor cosmetic blemishes you can try a dab of Birchwood Casey Aluminum Black. It's worked for me in the past touching up minor blemishes on aluminum flames and such.

Cheers
Bill
