Need some direction......I know how some of you guys feel on ported guns (not good). I guy I work with has a 6 inch 629-1 that has been Mag Na Ported.....also wearing some rubber stocks. No box or docs but does come with a box of 50 rounds. He is stuck on $650...already tried to work him. I haven't seen the gun yet....claims it hasn't been shot much and in very good shape.

If it passes all the standard revolver "before u buy checks" what do you guys think of this deal. I know it limits the upside appreciation of the gun...but you don't see many 44's for 650 either. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks

It is a good price as you describe it. Personally I would not port an unmodified gun like this, but since it is already done you may like it. Perhaps offer to pay for the the box of ammo at a range trip and see how it works?

I really loved my 6" 629 until I had it ported.

After porting it, I got rid of it.

Didn't like the upward blast at all...

YMMV.

I have a 29-3 that was magnaported before I bought it years ago. It does help a little with muzzle flip, but less powerful the load the less it helps. Full house loads get the most benefit.

Since the gun is already modified, and it's a good price, how about cutting the barrel a little shorter to remove the porting?

How much to shorten the barrel and add the front sight?

In all honesty I'd like some feedback on the gun the way it sits now....is it a $650 gun with the ammo?

Thanks......

I'd say yes.
Depends on how many cast bullets you plan on shooting.
The ports don't affect copper bullets at all and can help with muzzle rise and perceived recoil.
Cast bullets on the other hand tend to spray a bit of lead out of the ports, possibly diminishing accuracy and leaving a streak of lead on the barrel under the front sight.
I have a 4" 629 I had ported but only because I felt I wanted more control with full house loads.
And that I got.
But it's never been as accurate as some other revolvers I own.
Prices on 6" 629-1 seem to start around $875 on GunBroke.
Be aware that the cylinder throats on guns of this vintage are quite large.
My 6" 629-1 measures .433 (along with all the other mid 80's stainless revolvers).
If shooting cast, you will want to find the largest diameter bullets you can.

You best bet, as always, would be to shoot the gun before you buy it but I know that's not always possible.
Luckily that was the case with the 6" below.

The smudge above the port on the 4" is lead I don't want to rub off and risk damaging the bead blast finish of the revolver
