A new post went up this am that kinda ties into this thread that Lipseys has unveiled a 629 and 686 Mountain gun and both with no lock hole, I woukdnt be a bit surprised if a non lock 617 Mg is in the works.

That half-lug 617 looks like a big brother to the 8-shot 63-5. I wonder what the weight difference is?

I can definitely see the advantage of a Mountain revolver if you are going to carry your revolver in a holster, less weight. However, I one who loves the looks and heft of a revolver with the full length under lug. I think that my 617-1 with 4 inch bbl with full length lug is just perfectly balanced. Now I do kind of wish mine had a target trigger and target hammer, but the action on mine is so perfect I'm not gonna mess with it.

Glad you like yours I've been temped to take my portaban saw to my 4 in and remove it. Useless steel and makes the gun heavier than a 22 needs to be. My 18 is a much handier gun. Really wish they'd make more of the 617 mtn gun. I'd be on that like a quail on a June bug.

I'd sure like to have one of these. I love shooting rimfire since its much easier on the wallet and the neighbors don't gripe as much.

If S&W built these mountain guns in .22LR without the lock they would sell. Build it and they will come. I can't see why they would not build them other than it is a numbers game. Will it be cost effective and profitable?

Two model 617 6 inch Ashland guns sold in the past few days on GB. One sold for $1525 and the other for $1700. Both came with original boxes, paperwork and accessories.

I may have posted this before and not wanting to hijack or drift the thread but regarding low production models 617's, here's T-B: Ashland 6" Target, 6 & 4" Standard, followed by 1998 limited run 10-shot, 4" Square butt (23 produced), Round butt (17).

It's a funny thought really: but take a moment to think of S&W's milling/cutting/riffling process and how quickly 42 barrels could be made in error.

That could be the answer, and a funny and real possibility.
