617 excessive leading around forcing cone

I would be bummed too. Wonder how that happened.

I wonder if the PO knew about it or not- it was still accurate, just annoying as **** with the piles of lead... Glad I saw it before shooting anymore.

I have a 617 I bought recently, forcing cone is crappy on it, spits lead in your face occasionally. Don't know whether to send it back of have the forcing cone redone locally. I have not been satisfied with any S&W warranty work. They are really crappy now days.

I'd have a local gunsmith do it. They shouldn't charge much, it's an easy job. My friend and I spit the cost of the tools and we have done lots of guns between the two of us.

Mine was spitting lead and now doesn't. It also groups very well now with anything I shoot out of it.

I would have had mine done locally too, or tried it myself, until I found the cracked frame.. Who ever does your work, have it checked over with a fine tooth comb.

Mine just shipped back to S&W via fed ex today- I will keep you all informed what happens. I love this revolver, guess I will probably be getting a new one, which will cost me $40 to have it transferred to me again :(

There should be no fee, nor background check required for a replacement gun. I had an apparently un-repairable Ruger that was replaced by the factory. When I went to pick it up, from the shop that mailed it off, it was just as simple as the counter guy handing it over.

I would think S&W would send you a replacement! A few years ago I bought a 686+ that had several but minor problems. I sent it in for repair and they sent a replacement to my door FedEx!

Wow! That frame is definitely toast. Contact S&W, see if they will replace it for no cost or low cost.

It was returned to the factory this Tuesday, so hopefully I will hear back soon. I have no idea how long it will take them to get to it, but hopefully soon.

Follow up with an e-mail and a phone call. It helped me get my gun back after it was there for two months and I was getting the same excuse each time. I finally asked for the supervisor, then his supervisor until I go my gun back.

I emailed them yesterday, i plan to keep emailing, and if I don't get a response, I will call. I hope it doesn't take 2 months... I sent a rifle back to Ruger, and had it back in 9 days fixed and test fired.

They responded back to my email, basically said I will get a return email with tracking information once it has been shipped, otherwise call their 800 number. I will probably wait till next week, then call them.

I received an email last saturday saying they received the gun and they gave me an RMA number.

I just called customer support, They said it is still being evaluated, and call back mid next week.

The wait continues...

I just called S&W support to check on the status, and they said it was sent to the Metellurgical labs for evaluation, and sent back to Support, and I should get a letter or email with findings soon. Whatever that means... I sure hope it doesn't cost me anything, or at least not much... I spent almost $800 on this revolver...

Being photos taken after you got the gun but before you ever shot it there's no way to say that fouling came from 100 rounds or 100,000. But the character of the fouling, with what are clearly bullet shavings and shards, says to me that it needs to go home for a checkup, as inconvenient and aggravating as that is. What puzzles me is your report that it shoots well; stranger things happen, but I'm amazed. Most guns I've encountered that showed anything indicative of being that kind of out-of-whack would not have been described as good shooters.

I agree. It's out of time. I have a 617, and only see forcing cone buildup with very dirty ammo, such as Thunderbolt.

There is no softer or worse ammunition from Maine to Spain than Remington Thunderbolt. In less than 50 rounds you will be keyholing shots. Making junk is why they are in the toilet

You will have no problems. Smith & Wesson have an excellent repair warrantee and I'm sure you will get the work done for free. It does take them time though.
