I get a fair bit of leading around the forcing cone on my 617 but it shoots extremely well so it doesn’t bother me.
I would be bummed too. Wonder how that happened.
I suspect it came from over torquing the barrel when installed. But just my guess.I would be bummed too. Wonder how that happened.
I'd have a local gunsmith do it. They shouldn't charge much, it's an easy job. My friend and I spit the cost of the tools and we have done lots of guns between the two of us.I have a 617 I bought recently, forcing cone is crappy on it, spits lead in your face occasionally. Don't know whether to send it back of have the forcing cone redone locally. I have not been satisfied with any S&W warranty work. They are really crappy now days.

Mine was spitting lead and now doesn't. It also groups very well now with anything I shoot out of it.
I would have had mine done locally too, or tried it myself, until I found the cracked frame.. Who ever does your work, have it checked over with a fine tooth comb.
Mine just shipped back to S&W via fed ex today- I will keep you all informed what happens. I love this revolver, guess I will probably be getting a new one, which will cost me $40 to have it transferred to me again![]()
Wow! That frame is definitely toast. Contact S&W, see if they will replace it for no cost or low cost.
It was returned to the factory this Tuesday, so hopefully I will hear back soon. I have no idea how long it will take them to get to it, but hopefully soon.
Follow up with an e-mail and a phone call. It helped me get my gun back after it was there for two months and I was getting the same excuse each time. I finally asked for the supervisor, then his supervisor until I go my gun back.
I agree. It's out of time. I have a 617, and only see forcing cone buildup with very dirty ammo, such as Thunderbolt.
... it was sent to the Metellurgical labs for evaluation.....
