617 finish

I started hand polishing some of my revolvers. The first was a 686 3 inch and the factory finish was pretty good. I used Flitz only took lots of nights watching TV to get it where I wanted it to be.
I started on my 617 22 LR a couple nights ago and as I got into it the factory finish is terrible. Lots of pit's ding and uneven spots.
Both of these are new and unfired. How can QA be this far apart in products going out the door?

I think the talented craftsmen who used to work at S&W are all gone. Their replacements are more assembler than craftsmen, so the quality of the finished guns are not what they once were.
