617 option opinions?

I'm a new owner of a 4", 10 shot 617. Overall all I am well pleased with this revolver. But, there are a few things that could be improved on.

First is the grips. It seems that my third finger is touching the finger groove behind the trigger guard. And, the bottom of the grip feels too big for my pinkie. The revolover has a round butt. Any suggestions for replacing the grips?

I find the all black sights hard to see. I have a Glock with a HiViz on the front. Is there something like that for the 617? What are the recommendations for replacement sights?

Is there a spring replacement kit, for the hammer and the trigger, available?

Hogue makes some nice wooden grips and also a rubber grip (may be the one you have). If you're super picky, go to www.hogueauction.com and check out their overruns, overstocks and seconds.

Some people apply a red or fluorescent paint on the front sight. I think some company sells sight paint. Model airplane paint has been used by some, along with bright red nail polish. You can also check with brownell's and midway usa for what they have to offer.

I had a model 17-8, which was the blue version with alloy cylinder. It was a great gun that I foolishly sold and deeply regret having done that. Was able to load ten shots quicker than I could load 'em in a magazine. A total joy to shoot and own.

Check with Wolff Springs. They make quality springs for virtually any gun and may have something for yours. If you make the mainspring weaker, you may experience light strikes and misfires.

The factory Hogue monogrip worked fine for me, but I just couldn't abide that ugly piece of rubber on such a nice gun. I went with a set of Ahrend's Retro Combats and I really like them. Eventually I'd like to go to more of a target profile and get a nice round to square conversion for it.

I put a fiber optic front sight on mine and it works great. But I would only replace the trigger return spring not the main spring. Replacing the trigger return spring with a 13 LB spring will make a great improvement in the trigger action. Don't replace the main spring 22s need the original main spring for reliability.

I replaced the trigger return spring my self as I have in all of my revolvers. The front sight I had someone else do because I don't have a drill bit that small and I didn't want to mess up the job.

I'd get some different targets first and see if the black sights grow on you. Paint your steel plates white, or get a different colored paper target. These guns are very accurate with the stock sights. I would look into getting a red ramp for the front if that isn't an option. Surely they can be fitted to the 617 barrel. All I would think that you may need to do to make it work would be to get a taller insert for the rear sight.

I have the 4'' and 6'' 617.I shoot plates with them.I have a red hi viz on the 4'' a green hi viz on the 6''.For me the green works better. Your going to need the DC-10- loader and loading blocks too.If I could fig out how to put a picture on here I would show it to you.

I pleaded the case for a "drop in" replacement for the OEM front sight to the Hi-Viz people, and to Smith & Wesson's smiths at the Shot Show a few years ago, and, lo and behold, it has become a Hi-Viz catalog item, which I'm happy to heartily endorse. My red front leaps out in full sunlight, and is bright and crisp in shadow, and, I'm happy to report, even works well when illuminated by headlamp in pitch-darkness, permitting camp-invading-skunk eradication long after sunset...

Grips are personal, find something that fits and strap them on. There are probably more grips made for K frames than any other. Ebay is a good source.
D-10 speedloaders -Nice!

If you paint the front sight, use testers (model paint). Use white first then whatever color you like. Apply with a tooth pick. Works well.

Spring kits are not hard to install but requires you to gut the gun. Get some good video instruction and GOOD tools or pay to have it done. Don't go too light or you'll have miss fires. Personally, I've found that Just swapping the main spring (easy) and shooting it (allot)will get you 90% of the way there.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions. I've put some orange paint on the front sight. I'm going to leave the springs as is and shoot it some more. As has been suggested, there are a lot of grip choices. I have got to try something. Those stock rubber grips are just killing the knuckle on my third finger.

ahrend grips

I just put a set of Ahrend grips with the finger grooves on my no dash 4 inch 617. They are fantastic. I dont know how I did without them for so long.
I would suggest looking on Gunbroker for them. The sellers name is
