So I was browsing my favorite place to look for used guns and a gentleman had placed an ad to sell a 6" pre-lock 617 for $600. I think this is an excellent deal but would like some feedback from someone more in the know. BTW he also had a 6" had a 66-2 for $500. I sent an email to him offering $1000 for both. He sent back the 66-2 was SPF and someone was looking at the 617 tomorrow. So he said if both or one of the deals fell through I was next in line. What do you think would that be a good buy? In case you want to look the pistols are on vaguntrader.com under handguns it was on the 3rd page when I wrote this. Also neither pistol has the original box or papers. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I would not worry about the loss of the 617. A four inch barrel is more popular. And as said, a band new revolver can be had for a little more. I bought at a lgs a new 617-6 4" for $730.00 on March 15th. I am glad I did not go with a used gun.

Doesn't make much sense to give up the warranty and the other improvements from modern metallurgy and CAD for $130.00.

I have a 6 inch 617-0 and I'd absolutely buy that pre lock for $600, no question. If it has factory combats it's a excellent deal.

Of course condition is the determining factor but for excellent condition examples without boxes $1000 for both or $600 for the 617 seems very fair.

If it's a 6 shot, I'd forget it. You can buy a new 10 shot version for not a lot more. Oh, and I don't care the tinniest bit about the lock.

Unless you are considering the 617 for competitive shooting or home defense I don't think the 6 shot versus 10 shot capacity is an issue. On the other hand there can be some advantages to a new gun in terms of warranty but a 617 should be very durable and unlikely to need any serious repairs.

In my opinion, assuming excellent condition, ladder13 has the most important observation. If the 617 has the original combat grips in excellent condition it would sway me away from a newer one with rubber grips.

It's a very good price for an original early 617, so if you like it it would be a good buy.

I just picked up a 4" 617 at LGS for $700.

Did you say a pre-lock six for six?
Don't wait too long. There are a lot of folks who think exactly the way I do on this one.

I have locks and pre-locks , 6 shooters and 10 shooters , but I feel the pre-locks are of better quality ( fit and finish ). They're all very accurate . If you could get both I'd do it they have good prices . Around my area anyone would average 100 to 300 more.

That's what I was thinking. My wife is gonna raise hell, but she will get over it. I hope he calls me back. The only thing is I am out of town, but told him I would have the cash Monday. Crossing my fingers hoping the deals fall through, and I can give both a new home.:)

I know I really want the 617, but someone is looking at it today. If......he doesn't buy it I am for sure. I think it will go along nice with my 6" 17-4, 2" nickel 34-1, 2 63's 3"& 5". Oh and the 617 is a 10 shot

New info on 617

Well just got an email from the gentleman.....and the 6" 10 shot pre-lock, pre-mim is still for sale for $600. I told him I would take it :D I just can't meet up with him until Monday  as I am out of town for the holiday. I just hope he holds on to it for me. From the pictures there look to be come scratches on the barrel, but since it will be a shooter and hopefully passed down to my daughters I think it is a good deal. I will look it over really good first though. But as long as the bore, timing, and lock-up are good I don't see how I can pass it up.

I saw those listed, if they had been closer I would have been interested. I don't think they were bad prices. Not may 617's floating around

Great news, glad you can snag it. Those scratches most likely can be removed with some Scotchbrite or polish.
Here's a -4 pic to hold you over. :)

Just talked to the gentleman and I will be meeting him Monday evening to pick up my new to me 6" original grips 10 shot 617 for $600. I asked about the scratches and he said that was from the camera. He shot about 1000 rods through it when he bought it new in 98, cleaned it and has been in the safe ever since. Now I just can't wait until Monday!!

I just spoke with the gentleman and come Monday evening I will be the proud owner of a 6", pre lock, original grips, 10 shot 617. He told me the pistol had around 1000 rounds shot through it when he bought it new in 98. Then it was cleaned and been sitting in his safe since. I will post pics once I pick it up. He also said those were not scratches just reflection from the camera. Now it will drive me crazy waiting. Thanks for the pick though to tide me over.
