624 "no dash"

I saw this one for sale on a local board, and made a trade for it. Really nice looking gun. No box or papers.

Model 624, 6 1/2" barrel, 44 Special.

I have read/heard that S&W has recalled some of these for improper heat treatment of the cylinder. Anybody know anything about it (I did a search, didn't find anything)? S/N is AHC0xxx, which appears to be early '86. (Never mind. Expanded/reworded the search and found it.)

I'm not crazy about SS or barrels longer than 4", so it might be trade bait for something else.

I was going to try working a trade on the same gun but the recall had me running a little shy. Factory will give you a serial range and if your's falls within it needs to go back for magnaflux. If OK then factory stamps the cylinder with a F and the box will have a red circle C. No more cylinders at factory so - do you feel lucky?

Ok...Is the "F" a definate indication it's been checked? From what I found with the search, there seems to be some question. This one is stamped with the "F" on the back of the cylinder.

Yes - if your gun has the F mark then you are good!

I've got it listed on the trader board now. I'm going to try to turn it into a Model 19, 4" with box and such. If not, I've got a nice 624.

It's my understanding that S&W never marked the guns themselves after the cylinders were inspected. They marked the box with a red C to indicate that it was certified OK. I also heard that there were no cylinders available so if they found it unsafe they would give you a voucher for a 629. Good Luck nice looking gun!

May I suggest you shoot it before you trade it? There's something about the 44 Special that's addicting. My M24 6 1/2" goes with me on nearly every shoot while a lot of other stuff stays home. Despite your preference for non-stainless, you may just decide to keep it!

This is pretty much correct. S&W did NOT mark the 624/629's when they were tested because of the recall, but they did mark the box with a red letter "C". The "M" was stamped on the 586/686's that were modified because of a different recall.

I checked a 629 recently and the information S&W provided me exactly matched the info in the gun FAQ's.

Your gun is in the suspect range. Phone S&W (1-800-331-0852) and ask for Kate Fredette.

For those contemplating the purchase of one of these guns, here is the "red C" marking on the box that indicates it was checked at the factory and found to be OK.

I might shoot it if it doesn't sell, or I don't decide to just trade it. I've got a 24-3, 4" that is a great shooter. One of my favorite guns already.

Did you talk to Kate Fredette? AH is in the range. I spoke with another customer service person before I got hold of Kate and they didn't know anything about the recall and gave me bad info.

Correct on the AH revolvers.
Got mine cheap and then sent it in for sideplate replacement so it got inspected at the same time.
If it hadn't needed the new sideplate, would probably just fired it.
Never heard of one blowing up or having any sort of problem.

Very slight change of subject as I have kind of beat the 624 to death in here:

Has anyone EVER seen a 624-1 (or-2)?

I know they are listed in the book but have never seen one referenced in here.
I have always been under the possibly mistaken impression these were made just the one time in 1985.
