I'm watching an on-line auction of a "Mountain Gun in .45ACP". The box lists the caliber as .45 NOT .45ACP but the Product Code appears correct for a MG in .45ACP. The stock is listed as SB NOT RB. The cylinder is NOT chamfered like MG cylinders are. Below are some pics. L---->R: the box. A traditional chamfered MG cylinder. The cylinder on the revolver for sale. I own several Mountain Guns. ALL are round butts. All have the chamfered "Black Powder cylinder". WHAT is going on here ? ? ?

Got a link to the auction?

There is a rule prohibiting a link to a live auction on this forum, so I am forbidden to accommodate your request. It can EASILY be found on Gun Broker, however.

On Thursday I bought a 625 Mountain Gun in 45 ACP. It has the same product code as the one you show and (I just noticed) also says SB, but it has a round butt. Unfortunately, someone polished it ...

ETA: it does have the black powder chamfer.

ETA: it does have the chamfer black powder cylinder. Thank you for your response, nawlinson. It appears that the erroneous caliber markings and frame designation (.45 NOT .45ACP and SB NOT RB) as well as the Product Code are consistent with yours. YOU have the correct cylinder, the auction revolver does not. I believe that S&W made two runs of the MG in.45ACP. Perhaps the two different Special Order codes refer to each of these runs, or maybe the standard rather than the Black Powder cylinder. I do not have the scope of knowledge to answer such questions. HOPEFULLY, someone who does will pop in.........

Well. whatever goin' on with this Mountain Gun with an incorrect cylinder, it was sold. I missed the last 10 minutes of the auction, but the last bid I saw was $905. I was not a bidder , just a spectator. I was turned off by the cylinder issue and the lack of any explanation by an expert here, so I passed. Soooo, best wishes to the new owner. If it shoots as well as my 4 inch 625-3 he will be VERY happy.....

I followed that auction as well, simply as a spectator. I have been doing some research on recent prices as I'm really looking for a 625 .45 Colt Mountain Gun and have been flabergasted by recent prices. What in the world is going on?

Hi, OK HS. Do you know what monetary figure that auction actually ended at ? ? I paid a tad over $900. for my 4 inch 625-3, Model of 1899 a coupla years ago. I was in SHOCK, but determined to buy it because I can no longer operate my 1911 due to health problems. The .45ACP cartridge obtains MAXIMUM accuracy and versatility out of a revolver. That 625-3 ended up being WORTH EVERY CENT (much to my surprise) AND I have not seen another for sale in 4 inch since my purchase of this one. i have 3 MGs in .357 Mag, .44 Mag, and .45 Colt. I would have liked to have a MG in .45ACP, but NOT this one with the questionable cylinder @ this price, JUST to be able to say that I have one---(I REALLY don't "need" another .45ACP revolver). All I can say re the high prices is that the 4 inch .45ACP revolvers are VERY sought after by IPSC shooters. You should be able to buy a a 625 MG in .45 Colt in the mid $700. range. They are GREAT revolvers in a very versatile caliber. I'm sure you will love yours. Good luck in your search.......

Just wanted to note that my while my 629-2 early Mountain revolver has the chamfered cylinder my 686-5 Mountain Gun cylinder does not have the chamfered cylinder.

my 625-6 45 ACP has the same prod code but has a lower spec ord # (lower than nawilson's) and it has a chanfered cylinder.Maybe only the earlier ones were???

For what it's worth,I've gotten tired of looking for an ACP Mountain Gun that I could afford,so I just received a 4" slender barrel, SS, .45 ACP barrel from Midway. It does NOT say Mountain Gun on it but it is the same thing. I'll be converting my 5" Mod. 1988 to Mountain Gun specs. as soon as I can get the proper cup tip punches from Brownells. Lacking the machinery ,I'll not attempt to bevel the cylinder.BTW; the barrel was on back order from Midway for 30 days,I called at thirty days and was told the back order was extended to sometime in Feb. The next day I got a notification that it was shipped. It arrived here 3 days later. Boy, I was impressed! I'm still looking for a 3" 625 ACP. if anyone has one laying around that is reasonable. Nick

Sometimes, ya just gotta take matters into your own hands.........

Regarding the auction on the MG, I had been following it out of curiosity, as noted above. Pursuant to a request from one eye, I was able to check the final auction price... I hope everybody that's gonna read this is sitting down!

$1,351.00

Hang on to your Mountain Guns, men, they may be your ticket to financial security!!!

I have been looking for months, to no avail, for a 3" barrel to swap in place of the 5" on my Model 625-8. A couple of weeks ago I found that Midway was offering the 4" Mountain Gun barrels in .45acp. I ordered one right away, but, it looks like it won't get here until sometime in March.

I would still love to have a 3" M-625 in .45acp, but I think the lighter profile, Mountain Gun set up will work out just fine....

 $1351???

I almost feel like those people on Antique Roadshow. :D

Mine Mountain Gun .45 ACP isn't a show piece and came with no box, tools.

But it's clean, and at the price I just saw? Yeah...I'll be keeping it for sure.

Here's a pic of my three--all purchased used, only one with a box. L to R, they are a 686+, a 629, and a 625 in .45 Colt. The individual pic is the .45 Colt. The grips are Ahrends. I would love to add a 4th in .45ACP, but not at $1351.00...............
