I've got a Performance Center 627-3 V-Comp and its a great piece. When I got mine I called Smith customer service about the moon clips and they said that with the .357 the moon clips aren't necessary, although the .357 cases won't fully extract from the cylinder, you have to pluck them out. I had some issues with the moon clips and my handloads, they wouldn't fully seat in the cylinder, factory rounds worked great. The posters on here told me to get a Lee Factory crimp die and it should solve the issues I was having. I picked up the die but I haven't gotten around to trying it out yet. I bought mine as new old stock about a year ago and paid $875 out the door.

I had both the 3 and 5 inch 627 PC V-Comp models. My son "purchased" the 5 incher and I finally sold the 3 inch version. Both used rounds with or without moonclips - I used the Ranch Products moonclips. They were very well finished guns with nicely tuned actions.

I would probably be shooting more 38 spl handloads than anything. What is the porpoises of the moon clips?

Very nice gun, does not use moon clips. Only con is the absurdly high price. I think they are close to $1400 new out here.

The best thing to use is Federal or Starline brass, other wise you will have problems.

I've been shooting 627-5 V-comp going on 3 years at least at one sometimes 2 monthly matches. Easily my most favorite revolver, astoundingly accurate.

Can get by without the moon clips, but far easier to use them when time is critical. 38 cases load easier than the longer 357 as the cheap clips I have allow a bit of movement. Trying to stuff all 8 in the holes at the same time is an acquired skill!

Rarely see one for sale in my area, and not many being used in the small matches I attend. And the 627 is a different bird than the lighter 327TR8 with very different handling qualities. I shoot side by side sometimes with a buddy that has the 327 I almost bought....and I'm VERY happy I got the 627.

I haven't found any 'cons' to this model. Maybe the price, but the performance level is higher as well IMHO. I have one like the photo above, without the muzzle extension mounted. Haven't seen any need as of yet to mount it.

I use the moon clips that came with my 627-5 v-comp. It does make loading easier and I have no problem ejecting. My issue has been putting the bullets into the clip itself. Maybe the clips need to be used a bit to stretch them out, who knows but it sometimes takes a bit of an effort.
