Hi all,

I bought a 627 PC, 5 inch barrel, no lock, .357 magnum from my dad before he died a couple years ago, and I'm looking for the year it was manufactured and any other information about it that might be available. The serial number is RJM0XXX.

The finish is slightly worn on the hammer indicating that it might have been holstered a fair bit, but otherwise it's in pretty good shape and is an excellent shooter.

I've attached a photo. Please let me know if you'd like more information.

Thanks for any help.

If you still have the original box (black docksil if memory is working), 95% of the time the date of manufacture is coded on the end label

If you do not have the original box, the RJM prefix is what started the eight shot Model 627s (SKU 170089) back in 1997 at RJM0001

This is serial #27. I changed the grips to the Hogue wood and put a set of 3 dot tritium night sights on it

We can all thank Lew Horton Distributors for pushing Smith & Wesson into making the first 300 Model 627s that carried eight rounds of 357 Magnum ammunition back in 1996. It was supposed to end with those first 300.

However, it turned out that this was the fastest selling Distributor Exclusive they ever had, so 300 more were built.

This concept became so popular that it was eventually added to the catalog. Since 1997 dozens of variations of the 8 shot Model 27/327/627 family of revolvers have been offered to shooting enthusiasts around the world

Thank you, colt_saa.

Mine is serial number 548. I don't have the original box. My dad almost certainly bought it used and there was no box for this one among his effects. (He kept all the boxes for guns he bought new.)

I did ask him where and when he bought it but he couldn't remember.

I do like the grips on yours!

The second batch of 300 was completed before the end of 1997

The grips are Hogue Monogrip in Goncalco Alves wood with the no finger groove option and the contrasting butt cap and white line spacer

You can order a set anytime from Hogue, part number 25230, but you have to wait for them as these are special order. They do not keep them in inventory
