I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced an issue such as this.

This winter I purchased a new 627 PC to shoot in USPSA and Steel Challenge.

When reloading the cylinder / yoke "falls out". It happens every time with push speed loaders (Speedbeez & Safariland) and frequently with moon clips.

Thinking perhaps I just got a short retaining screw I purchased a new replacement but it did not help.

S&W customer service said they have never heard of this issue, though I found a couple hits on the web - but not with the same gun model.

S&W sent me an RMA right away but said they have a backlog of at least a month, so either I buy another gun or don't shoot revolver for the rest of the summer.

I'm new to revolver shooting so I'm curious. Is this likely a manufacturing defect or something I'm doing ? I don't feel like I'm pushing on the cylinder at all when loading moon clips but I've shot 3 matches with the gun and it has happened on two stages at all three matches.

Any thoughts or advice appreciated. (Especially if it's not "buy another one :) )

627

The sooner you send it back the sooner you get it back. I will add that I have a bunch of 627s and ever heard of this problem. But don't stop shooting, use something else just to keep in the game. Slow is fast.

This problem is known among competition shooters. The screw with the plunger is sometimes made with a plunger short enough that it can retract far enough to allow the crane to come off the gun when pushed on, as happens when executing a fast reload.

The fix is to somehow make it so the plunger has only enough movement to allow the crane to work freely, but not enough to let it go. This can be remedied by putting a pin behind the plunger to limit the travel or making a new, longer part.

I had it happen one time with my M610 .. The screw had come loose and I hadn't noticed it. Tighten the screw and I was back up and running..

I had the retaining screw come apart on my 627 Pro at the range and the yoke and cylinder landed on the bench, which was luckily made of wood. I called S&W and they sent me a new retaining screw when I called them and was back in business with that gun. Give them a call and see if they will send a new screw and see if that fixes your problem.

This is the reason I don't like the newly designed S&W's for any kind of competition. The older versions with the solid yoke screw never had these problems. The "V" groove in the yoke pin and the smooth pointed spring loaded yoke screw just don't hold up to that kind of hard use. My recommendation is get an older model with a solid screw.
