627 Serial Number Prefix List????

Actually there are two 8 shot Model 627s from the Production side of the house.

Product code 163357, your 4" heavy barrel. Remember that the 357/registered Magnum/Model 27 family of revolvers used a tapered barrel. 163357 is the same profile as the 41 and 44 Magnum revolvers DKerns2 you need to add 163357 to your spreadsheet

Product code 178014, the 4" 627 Pro. Pro series firearms are made on the production line with some added Performance Center parts. Most sellers claim that while manufactured on the production side, assembly occurred in the Performance Center, but there is no evidence that supports that

Yes, now i recall those "Pro" models...
And to repeat what someone else had mentioned in another thread, too bad S&W didn't make a 627 with a standard barrel, moonclip ready cylinder, and quick change front sights

It's in this pic, there were 2 (rumored) of the 8" guns made, one went to Ernie Vadersen who was the founder of Snake Eyes golf clubs and then became the President of S&W Golf. Got to be friends with Ernie and eventually he sold me the 8" gun in this pic. Supposedly there was another made, but it's never surfaced to my knowledge.

P.S. as s&wchad mentioned, I had my 2 5/8" gun fitted with a fluted cylinder as well as the 6" gun, I just never warmed to unfluted cylinders.

This 8" gun was in my collection for a few years, but eventually I sold it to another collector, to my knowledge he still has it, it's a pretty special gun..

Just remembered that there was yet another variation of these M627's, it had a 6" Slender Slab barrel, like the 5" in the pic above. I've never seen one in person, but another collector has one (the same person who now has the 8" gun shown above). Had a line on one of the 6" slender slab guns many years back but was either outbid on it or was too slow on saying "I'll take it"..

Oh Well, that's the fun of collecting (assuming you get the item.. :D)

I sent a letter request to S&W for 627-3 with the CNC serial prefix. I'll publish to this thread when I get it. Seems to be a gap here. Does anyone know what year they would have started to include fired cases? Mine is NIB with all papers but no fired case and no outer carton for product code. I thought this gun was in the 2001 range.

The fired casing began to be included in 2000 shortly after Maryland and another State that I can't recall passed a law that required the fired cases to be delivered with brand new firearms

Upon purchasing the firearm the shop was supposed to deliver the casing to the State so that it could be kept on file and used as comparison against firearms used in crimes

By Law, the envelope containing the fired cartridge had to be delivered to the State unopened

Maryland shut down their program in 2016 after never having been able to solve a single firearms involved case

Who knows how many hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars were wasted on this terrible terrible idea

Truth is it actually surprised me that Maryland admitted this and did away with the division that processed all of this. Most Governments will not give up departments and there personnel once they have been started

Look under the foam in the case. Usually the Factory put a second end label there for Performance Center offerings that had the label on an exterior cardboard box

I know you said NIB, but I am guessing that you are not the first person to purchase that firearm at Retail. I am also guessing that you actually purchased that firearm Used from a private party and it is unfired since leaving the Factory or LNIB. The internet has slightly corrupted these terms over the years

If that is the case, that you bought it second hand, then there are many reasons why the fired case was not included with your firearm.

That's what I love about this forum, very educational. Thank you Colt saa. Merry Christmas.

Can’t believe that i haven’t mentioned this already, but mokuloa, a member of this site, has written a detailed article on PC 627s for the S&WCA Journal (published in 2012). His article gives the history on the PC627, includes the sku numbers and many pics.
I’ve referenced the article many times when researching and collecting them.

Latest draft

Thankyou Colt_SAA for the revisions... Keep them coming if you see something.

I do find it interesting that I have started to highlight certain prefixes in School Bus Yellow as being the same prefix used on different Product code/Barrel Lengths... ie... HMAXXXX is used on product code 170133 from both the 627-PC and the 627-3 models. In the same vain, BCFXXXX is used on product code 170210 regardless if it is a 627-5 or a 627-6 Pro-Series.

More strange, that in the 627-5 Models, DKJXXXX & DYSXXXX are used on both 170210 and 170133 product codes/variants interchangeably...

Enjoy...

Boy, the best way to find out you're not as crazy as you thought you were is by going where people are crazier than you are... about N frames :-)

I'd like to throw my 627-1 in the mix. As you see it is how I got it. 5" barrel, unfluted. I always found it a little odd that the Smith and Wesson on the barrel is rolled, the other side is laser marked .357 magnum while the side plate has a different type of laser etch of ".357 Magnum Model 627". It has a BRD prefix. Would this fall under product code 101030?

DKerns2, thanks for the latest update!

Of these, I still have only the "LHV" shown below the "NWR" V-Comp. The 6 1/2" is "JMS", and the 5" is "RJM".

So I received my letter back from S&W. I think they have it wrong. My gun is certainly not engraved with a ramp front and not a polished finish. See pics of the letter. Sorry I can't get them to rotate.

Interesting... Let us know if they issue a revision. This one has my curiosity piqued as it is a shared prefix with the 627-PC and you have a low serial number.
