629-1 Recall

Been reading posts here and need some opinions. I have 629-1 with s/n in the N9111XX range. It seems to be in the cylinder recall range. Have a return label coming but not sure to send it in or not. I would hate to lose it for having a bad cyl if they can't replace it and keep the gun. I've had it since new and box does not have the red circled C on it. Anyone know how many actually were bad, or has anyone sent there's in and WAS bad. And what was the outcome.

I thought the recall pertained to the 624, not the 629. More info please, I have a 629-1, never heard of this. Thanks!

I believe there were some 629's involved as well. The factory still makes 629s, so they should have cylinders that could be installed. I don't think the -1s were recessed, so the appearance should not be changed.

You could call them and ask, or send an email.

It was also for the 629-1 models in certain s/n ranges and time frame. What is your s'n? Recall notice stated the s/n and dates Jan 1985 to June 1985 ship dates. But some of the dates and s/n don't jive.

My s/n is N911130 which is in the recall s/n range, but not the ship date range.(At least I don't think so). Anyone here know when mine would have been shipped??

S&W is closed for the holidays so can't call or email them now.

I sent a 64-2 in for a tune up the end of last year. Unknown to me it had two bulged chambers and needed the cylinder replaced. The new cylinder cannot be distinguished from the old. So going along with what Night owl stated if the test fails I would think a new cylinder could be fit without any issues.

So my s/n search is not lost in my above post, what is ship date of my 629-1 : N911130

A 629-1 that i had recently sold must have been on the recall list, as there is a red "C" stamp on the box, and the box is marked ".44SP"

Only a factory letter can provide you with a ship.

The serial number tables can provide a guesstimate of the manufacture date, but there are always exceptions.

Your revolver would have been around late 1982 or 1983.

Does your box have a hand written label or one of the newer computer printed ones? Most of the newer ones have the date of manufacture on the label.

I just went to check my 629-1. Sigh of relief as it's an AJLXXXX. Bought it from my BIL many years ago and love it!

My label is the older hand written styles If 1982-83 it is before the 1985 problem era, even though for some reason they include this s/n range in the recall.

Serial number tables are good for knowing approximately when a frame was manufactured since they get numbered sequentially.

However, firearms were not always assembled or shipped in serial number order. That is why a letter is necessary to determine a ship date.

Call S&W and let them determine if your revolver is subject to recall.

My 629-1 is an AFP serial prefix from Dec. 84-Jan 85.
It has the red circle on the box if this helps at all.
All 3 of my 624s from 1985 also have the red circle.
They all shoot great although they require somewhat oversized bullets.
