SCSW say 5 sights came with this gun but it lists 8.
What am I missing?

...black ramp, red ramp, post with white dot, gold bead, and four black Patridge sights for 50, 100, 150 and 200 meters, with white outline" = 8 or 5?

From SCSW 4th ED Nahaus and Supica...

Thanks

I've always believed it to be 5 total. Looking at gunbroker listings, when available, usually show 5 with the revolver.

So when it says the 4 patridge sights for 50,100, 150 and 200 yards is that 1 adjustable sight for those distances? I always thought the patridge referred only to the front sight.

The M 629-3 Classic DX came with 5 (total, with the one on the revolver) different front-sights:
Red Ramp, Black Ramp, Black Patridge, White Dot Patridge,
Patridge Gold Bead (missing in my pics), all .250 heigh

There was a time, when S&W offered (also in a set) Black Patridge front-sights in
different heighs for 50, 100, 150 and 200m

Found an example

Since most of us bought our DXs used we are not sure what sights were in the box when it left S&W. Even those who bought DXs new can't be sure that someone in the distributor through retailer chain did not switch their favorite sight out of the box.

However, I'm confident that DXs through dash 3 came with a set of different height patridge sights. DXs probably always came with those. The endurance upgrades were to make S&W .44 Magnums competitive in the then popular long range silhouette matches. DXs were the premium product for those matches, hence the silhouette patridge set.

While I'm not sure, I think Model29since14's recollection is correct, red ramp, gold bead and the 4 piece silhouette set. With 4 all black sights already in the box there was no motivation to add a black ramp. DXs were not for quick draw.

I doubt white dot fronts were included. S&W usually paired white dot fronts with two white dots on the rear blade and DXs all had white outline rears. Also, when I wanted good white dot blades I had to pay a local gunsmith to make a depression with an end mill to be filled with paint.

SCSW say 5 sights came with this gun but it lists 8.

"with white outline" refers to the rear blade.

29-5/629-3, 29-6/629-4 DX revolvers came with a total of 5 front sights with the red ramp mounted in the revolver.

From my extensive research and ownership of DX revolvers I am confident this is what came with them:

Brass/gold bead black patridge .227-100 yards
White dot patridge .250-50 yards
Red ramp .250-50 yards
Black ramp .250-50 yards
Black patridge .250-50 yards

Its strange that the brass/gold bead patridge was .227 but I have owned 8 DX revolvers and that was the sight set. Also I have never seen the .227 brass/gold bead offered for sale by Smith individually. The .227 gold/brass bead patridge was also in the 8 set kit with the Magna Classic revolvers.

In regards to how many came with the DX revolvers and of what type perhaps there is some confusion with the Magna Classic revolvers that came with a total of 8.

I am not sure what came with the 629-5 or 629-6 DX revolvers.

Other sights I have seen offered:

A black patridge kit containing a .187-200 yards,.208-150 yards,.227-100 yards and a .250-50 yards.

Also offered singularly was a .250-50 yards brass/gold bead patridge. I have found these to be rare and may have been included with the DX kit instead of the .227.

The is no such revolver as a 629-2 Classic DX FYI

Well, I have a 29-5 ( 1992) 5" Classic DX that I bought new, and while I have the 5 xtra sights that came with the gun, I have no idea what they are. They are tucked away in the box. I think I will take a look at them tomorrow

grip frame,

I have not done "extensive research," I only bought three used 8 3/8" DXs. I forget if they're all dash 3s or if the one that does not have a flash chrome plated hammer and trigger is a dash 4. In the Classic line there isn't much difference between a dash 3 and a dash 4. All three came with the 4 different height silhouette patridge blades. Could it be that the silhouette patridge blade set only came with the long barrel and that was not mentioned in whatever literature you researched?
