629-2 "Taper barrel"??

This one has "Smith & Wesson" roll-stamped on left side of barrel and ".44 MAGNUM" roll-stamped on right side. Have not seen in person but may be square-butt. All "mountain guns" I have seen were etched.
I see one listed in 4th edition as "629 Special",,,, a 1998 gun with product code 103619. That would have been into the -5 revisions (MIM & lock)

SAFireman pegged it. 629-2 Mountain Revolver has only Smith & Wesson and the .44 Magnum marks on the barrel.

True the only member of the Mountain Gun family with actual roll marks is the 629-2 Mountain Revolver, all the others are laser etched. The Mountain Revolver is also the only one with a bead blasted finish.

It could be a Mountain Gun with the logo polished off.

The 629-2 is the only Mountain Gun with roll-marks, all of the later iterations were laser engraved (and thus easily removed).

The 629-2 will have "Smith & Wesson" on one side of the barrel, and "44 Magnum" on the other. The frame will have the trademark S&W crest on the side plate and the standard address on the lower RH frame. All were pressed into the metal, and take a lot of sanding to remove completely.

Good luck, and post some photos, we all LOVE photos :D

The logo/caliber on both of my 629-4 MGs was very thin, could barely see it. I much prefer actual roll marks. My 625 MG and several classics have the cheesy laser etching, but are currently much more visible. I am very careful not to molest them.

629-2 taper barrel

SA Fireman is 100% correct. To polish off the roll marks of the M629-2 Mountain revolver would destroy the original contours of the revolver's barrel and sideplate.

I have one. 629-1 "Special Mountain Gun". 4" tapered barrel. Chamfered cylinder. Bead blasted satin finish. Pinned, ramped front sight. Roll marked stampings. Square butt, smooth, goncalo alves service grips. One of only 40 made in a special order by RSR Group in 1998. These were the only square butt "Mountain Guns" made. You are correct - the Product code is 103619.
