629-4 Mountain Gun

The product code 103652, indicates this is a -4, unfluted, GB (Glass Bead finish) with a prefix of CAP, 1989 production. This is from the SWSC page 310.

Interesting the info as 1989 production doesn't match the blue box used with your gun or the Julian date of 1996 that's on it.

One of those Smith & Wesson anomalies, I would guess. The gun serial matches the box, the product code matches the SWSC 4th book, and description. The CAP prefix, listed in the book on page #310, lists the date as 1989, but in the serial number appendix B, page #491 CAP is a 1996 prefix.

Don't try to make sense of it, and it'll make more sense, lol!:D

629-4 Mountain Revolver - Unfluted

I suspect the book is probably referencing the original version Mountain Revolver (fluted) 629-2 about the 1989 production date, as it doesn't match the "CAP" alpha prefix ( in appendix B)on my version of the Mountain Revolver.

Everything else is in line, the box matches the gun and the product code matches the description, and as does production date (1996)! We know 629-5 starts in 1997, meaning a 629-4 (including my gun) was produced in 1996 forward, as described.

All is good except seemingly the 1989, and that one reference to 1989, is what matches the original unfluted version, which is a 629-2, as mentioned by CH4, above.

I have a 629-4, unfluted cylinder, ported that looks exactly like the one shown. I don't have access to the box right now but I bought in NIB, in 1997 from Clark Custom Guns, serial no. CAP55xx. The revolver came as shown in the picture. It does light up the sky at night and shaves lead bullets and is a hoot to shoot.

Sounds like we're only a hundred or less off in production, if that considering other models, if that prefix is not exclusive to the Mountain Revolver.

I've held off on presenting this video, as I didn't want to relegate this thread to a pro/con with Magnaport/Powerport discussion. At the 5 min mark, Mr. Miculek, utilizes a MG for comparison with a titanium/scandium .44 mag.

I want to give attribution to Jerry Miculek for a concise and clear video on Smith & Wesson products and the Magnaporting/Powerporting effects. This video also addresses night firing of Magnaported guns and ammo selection. Er we go mate!

You may or may not have seen this, but I just did a pencil drawing of a mountain gun. A very cool revolver indeed.

THANKS FOR SHARING THIS EXTREMELY INTERESTING, AND INFORMATIVE VIDEO, Kingspoke.....

UNLIKE THE MASTER, I DON'T INDULGE IN SPEED SHOOTING FOR THE GOLD. I AM A RECREATIONAL BULLSEYE SHOOTER, HANDGUN HUNTER, AND CCW PERMIT HOLDER.....

I WOULD NOT LIKE A BLAST OF FLAME IN MY LINE OF SIGHT IN A DARK INDOOR PORT, OR GETTING BURNED BY THE UPWARD BLAST, IF I WAS FORCED TO FIRE THE WEAPON, WHEN IT WAS HASTILY DRAWN AND CLOSE TO MY BODY, IN A SD SITUATION......

One Eye Joe, I completely understand! Shooters are quite divided on ported guns, and I suspect most do not like them. I'll have to shoot mine to see where I stand, but since it is not my primary shooter anyhow, it will have little sway with me.

I must say, I am excited to shoot it though, before sending it off for some cosmetic S&W surgery!:D If I really like the porting, I might (probably not, lol) just keep it as is.

My first ported gun, first unfluted gun, and first gun with the satin "bead blast" finish. Cheers, all!
