Bought this gun because it was a 3" barrel 44 mag. Found a copy of a S&W letter saying this is one of 497 built. So it's not a Backpacker but a Mountain Backpacker? It is very nice to excellent and in correct box. Value? Rare? Desirable?

roman3667 where did you find that? That is desirable to me. Curious as to what that cost you. Shoot it in good health......

Don't know how valuable or rare it is but...I sure wish it was mine. Beautiful gun!

Haven't really been able to warm up to the full underlug. But nice prize nun the less!

I have seen one of those before and think you got a real winner on your hands. Enjoy!

Really nice find !!

If you ever decide its too much to handle..
Or getting lonely in your safe, I can give it a nice home..

Beautiful. I've never seen one before. I wonder if the grips have been replaced at some time?

Grips

Does yours have the original grips as well as the Ahrends? Price may be lowered if factory grips are missing.

No. Just the ones pictured but other ones I've seen here have same.

I had bought a 629-3 Backpacker brand new, very sweet little (for an N-frame) gun. Best trigger I ever felt on a factory gun! Sold it because I thought I needed a Mountain gun with the 4" tapered barrel. I'm still trying to buy it back from the guy I sold it to's son. . .
